Note: Gilbert died in the Arnot Ogden Hospital, Elmira, Chemung County, NY, from a massive coronary. In the late 1950's, he had a lung removed due to cancer.
He was elected mayor of Watkins Glen three times - two years each term. He was a Watkins Glen trustee before his election to mayor. He was also district manager of the Columbia Gas Corp, retiring in 1969. Gilbert belonged to the Jefferson Lodge F&AM No. 332, the Watkins Glen-Montour Falls Rotary, and the Corning Consistory. He was an elder and trustee of his church, the First United Presbyterian Church of Watkins Glen.
