Note: In Hope Cemetery is an Alice Neal - 1895-1914 and infant Neal - 1914-1914 1860 - Samuel was listed in the 1860 Liberty Twp. census without a wife. Lafayette, son of Samuel who was born September 24, 1861, has Shingle House (Sharon Twp., Potter Co., PA) listed as place of birth on his death certificate. Apparently Samuel married after the 1860 census, moved to Potter Co. by September of 1861 and was back in Liberty Twp. for the 1870 census. 1870 - census - Liberty Twp.: Samuel, age 36 Catherine, age 33 Layfayette, age 9 Isaac, age 7 Mary, age 5 Emily, age 4 John, age 3 Ulissis, age 2 Elizabeth, age 77, Samuel's mother 1872 - Samuel sold the old homestead to his brother William J. Neal on Aug. 19, 1872 and moved out west. His obituary states he lived in Corning for 22 years before his death so it appears he moved back east about 1896. 1873 - Oct. 9 - death of Catherine Taylor Neal, age 37. She was buried in Metier Cemetery, row 8, Garden Grove Twp., near LeRoy, Decatur Co., IA 1880 - census - White - Kingman Co., KS: Samuel Neal, age 38, widower, he and parents b. PA, farmer 1905 - Corning City and Painted Post Directory: Samuel Neal, gardener, home at 157 E. Third 1909-1910 - Corning City and Painted Post Village Directory: Samuel Neal, home at 176 Sly Ave 1910 - census, 176 Sly Ave., Corning, Steuben Co., NY: Samuel Neal, age 77, married twice, m. 27 yrs, b. PA, dad b. Ireland, mom b. PA, no occupation Josephine H., wife, married once, m. 27 yrs, one child, one living, b. MO , dad b. PA, mom b. NH, laundress at home Alvy, son, age 26, single, b. KS, dad b. PA, mom b. MO, does something at glass factory 1912 - Samuel was living at 176 Sly Ave. in Corning in 1912 when his sister, Mary Ann Rouse, died. 1917-1918 - Corning City and Village of Painted Post Directory, for Corning lists Samuel Neal owning a home at 176 Sly Avenue. 1918 - July - Death certificate for Samuel Neal on record at city clerk' s office, Corning, NY: Samuel died at his home at 176 Sly Ave. He was married, a laborer, born Liberty, PA, to John Neal who was born in Ireland and Elizabeth unknown who was born in Germany. Death occurred at 11:18 p.m. from Catarrhal Cholangitis with senility as a secondary illness. The informant was Alvy Neal of Corning. 1918 - July - The Evening Leader, Corning, NY - Samuel Neal, aged 85 years, died at his home at 176 Sly avenue at 11:18 o'clock last evening after an illness of two weeks. He had been in ill health for the past few years. Mr. Neal was born in Liberty, Pa, but had lived in this city for the past 22 years, living on the Southside for 10 years and on the Northside for 12 years. He was a member of the First M. E. Church of this city. He is survived by his wife and four sons, Lafayette of Griffith street, Corning, Eugene of Loveland, Colo., John of Los Angeles, Cal. and Alvy at home, and two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Miller of Liberty and Mrs. Matilda Jackson of Los Angeles, Cal. The funeral will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the home. Rev. David Haglund, pastor of the Baptist church, will officiate. Burial will be in the Hope cemetery.
