a. Note:   2001 - Oct. 18 - Thursday - "The Canton Independent-Sentinel": Janet Neal, 91, a former resident of Canton, passed away peacefully, October 13, 2001, at the Rose View Manor, Williamsport. Born in Fallbrook, PA, March 2, 1910, she was a daughter of the late Cole and Margaret (Lowery) Smith. She attended the Canton Schools; married the late Clifford E. Neal, October 27, 1928 in Elmira, NY. He preceded her in death, September 12, 1972, following 44 years of loving marriage. Mrs. Neal was no stranger to an honest day's work. In addition to being a loving, supportive mother and busy homemaker, she helped Clifford with the daily operations of their North Union dairy farm for many years. Mrs. Neal later worked as a cook at Our House Restaurant for 10 years. She loved times spent playing bingo; also enjoyed card games and crocheting beautiful afghans for her family and friends. Mrs. Neal was a member of the North Union Christian Church. Surviving are: her daughter and son-in-law, Flora Jane (Charles Jr.) Hicks, Williamsport; grandchildren, Susan (Jim) Tillotson, Muncy, Janice (Craig) Moore, Bradley (Lois) Hicks, all of Williamsport and Byron (Dawn ) Hicks, Avis; 12 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, and cousins. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by sisters, Alice Seeley and Belle Foust; brother, Tom Smith. The funeral was held October 16 with the Rev. Duane Taylor officiating, at the Pepper Funeral Home, Canton. Burial was in the Union Cemetery, Liberty Twp. Those wishing may make memorial contributions to the North Union Christian Church, c/o RR2, Box 312, Canton, PA 17724 in Mrs. Neal's memory.
  2002 - Sara Janet's granddaughter-in-law, Lois, wife of Brad, entered a pie baking contest held at Brandon Park, Williamsport, PA, during "Homade Days"; hers was one of 54 entries - Williamsport Sun-Gazette, Sunday, July 21, 2002, reported that Lois Hicks won third place on her peach pie entry. Excerpt from article - Lois took the time to peel the fresh peaches that went into her entry, which garnered the judges' nomination for third place. "This is fun," she exclaimed while awaiting the judges' decision. "I just started making pies a couple years ago." Her entry bore the name Grandma Neal's Peach Pie, named for Hicks' late grandmother on her husband's side. "She baked pies for a restaurant in Canton," Hicks said of her grandmother. "She told me to use ice water in the dough. It helps the dough stay together better." - Lois won a Panasonic microwave from Silvagni's Appliance and Electronics.
