Note: Possible background for Richard: Francis Smith, born about 1812, emigrated from County Wicklow, Ireland to NY in 1828. From there he went to Nova Scotia, where he may have married his wife, Julia, who was also born in Ireland. They had four children, two of them, daughters Sarah and Jane, were born in Nova Scotia. He was naturalized in Wellsboro, Tioga County, PA, 1846. Francis was a miner and in the 1850 census he was living in Bloss Twp., Tioga County. Richard was born in Tioga County, PA, and another child was born in 1847 in NY. 1880 - census - Arnot: Richard, age 33, grocery clerk Nancy, age 26, school teacher Emma, age 1month Maggie, age 17, servant 1897 - Nancie and Richard were living in Blossburg when Nancie's mother died. 1900 - June 8 - census - Wellsboro: Richard H. PA Francis LeRoy, son, age 25, single, highway Department 1920 - Jan. 12 - census - Wellsboro Borough, 51 Pearl St: Richard Smith, age ?, b. PA, parents b. Ireland, merchant at shoe store Nancy, age 65, b. PA 1922 - June 14 - Wed. - The Agitator - Wellsboro: Richard H. Smith, aged 76 years, died last Tuesday evening about 9 o'clock at the Blossburg hospital, after an illness of several weeks. He recently underwent an operation for appendicitis and complications. He had been in the shoe business in Wellsboro for the past 21 years. He was born March 12, 1846, in Blossburg, and removed with his parents to Woodhull, N.Y. At the age of 19 he went to work in the general store at Arnot, residing in Arnot for about 22 years. He married Miss Nancy Neal, of Arnot, on December 11, 1878, who survives him, with their two children, Mrs. Everitt W. Mack and F. LeRoy Smith, both of Wellsboro. Four grandchildren also survive - Richard and Neal Mack and Eleanor and Kenneth Smith; also one brother, Charles Smith, of Dansville, N.Y. and four sisters - Mrs. Jane Hughes, of Blossburg; Mrs. Mary Ann Guy, of Arnot; Mrs. Margaret Williams, of Elmira, and Mrs. G. C. Lee, of Bluefield, West Virginia. Mr. Smith removed to Wellsboro 28 years ago to become Deputy Sheriff under Sheriff W. F. Champaign. He was later elected County Treasurer and at the expiration of his term engaged in the retail shoe business, several years ago taking his son into partnership in the business under the firm name o F. L. & R. H. Smith. Mr. F. L. Smith became sole proprietor about a month ago. Mr. Smith was an elder in the Presbyterian church and a member of the I.O.O.F. He was highly esteemed by a wide circle of friends through out the county. The funeral was held Friday afternoon at two o'clock at the late home of the deceased on Pearl street, Rev. T. M. Hurst, of Arnot , officiating. Interment in the Wellsboro cemetery. 1930 - census - Wellsboro: Nancy N. Smith, age 75, widow, married at age 24 Everitt Mack, son-in-law, age 50, married at age 26, no occupation listed Mae Mack, daughter, age 49, married at age 25, no occupation listed Neal Mack, grandson, age 15 1933 - July 27 - Thursday - Wellsboro Gazette - PROMINENT BORO WOMAN SUCCUMBS - Mrs. Nancy Neal Smith Dies at Home in Boro - Was Useful Member of Community - Mrs. Nancy Neal Smith, 78, widow of Richard Smith, died last Thursday evening at her home on Pearl Street. In the passing of Mrs. Nancy Neal Smith, for thirty years a valuable and active member of this community, Wellsboro has lost a worthwhile woman. A great reader and student of the best literature, devoted to her church and family and keen in business, Mrs. Smith enriched the lives of many by her counsel and strength of character. Mrs. Smith was born September 11, 1854 on a farm in Lycoming county near Williamsport, a daughter of Daniel and Rachel Neal. When but sixteen years of age she began teaching school in Tioga county and continued to teach for the next eight years. In December, 1878 she was married to Richard H. Smith at Arnot. Mr. Smith was appointed Deputy Sheriff in 1893 and the family moved to Wellsboro, where Mr. Smith later engaged in the shoe business, which has been conducted by their son, F. Leroy Smith, since the death of Mr. Smith some years ago. Mrs. Smith was a loyal member of the Presbyterian church and a teacher in the Sunday school for many years, where she had a class of girls. During late years she had taught the class of Mrs. Luther Johnson. She was affiliated with the D. A. R., the S. H. G., a former member of the Business and Professional Woman's Club, and a leader in the work of the Needlework Guild and children's welfare work. She was active and alert until March 23 when she began to fail, suffering patiently until her death at her home on Pearl street where she lived with her only daughter, Mrs. E. W. Mack. Besides her daughter she is survived by one son, F. Leroy Smith, of Wellsboro; four grandchildren, Richard S. Mack of Troy, N. Y.; Neal Mack, Eleanor and Kenneth Smith of Wellsboro, and a great grandson, Richard Mack, Jr., of Troy, N . Y.. She is also survived by three sisters, Mrs. Angie Lewis and Mrs. W . E. Champaign, of Wellsboro and Mrs. Anna Ellison, of Blossburg. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon, Rev. Orrin G. Cocks, D. D., pastor of the Presbyterian church, officiating; burial in the Wellsboro cemetery. Among those from away who attended the funeral were: Richard S. Mack, of Troy, N.Y.; Mrs. Lena Crane and Miss Helen Crane, of Addison; Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Bower, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hughes, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Hughes, of Blossburg: Dr. Alice Hughes, of Williamsport; Raymond Guy and family, of Blossburg; Mrs. Lewis Williams, Mr. and Mrs. John Hoye and son, Jack, of Corning.
