 Sad Death Of Young Lady
Miss Alice Champaign Passes away at Ithaca After Short Illness.
A sad death occurred at Ithaca, N.Y. last Saturday morning, when Miss Alice Champaign, aged 16 years, a sweet young life, which, until recently was full of cheer and vigor, passed away at the home of her aunt, Mrs. Emma Champaign, in that city. She was the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Champaign and death resulted from an operation following an attack of scarlet fever. She had been ill less than two weeks. The operation for double mastoiditis was apparently successful and the doctor was most hopeful of her recovery, when at about 5 o'clock Saturday morning she began suddenly to grow worse. The doctors agreed that she died from embolism, a condition that nothing could have helped. Miss Champaign had been attending the Ithaca High School and was joined by her mother a few months ago, having taken apartments for the winter. The young lady was very popular with her many friends and associates in Wellsboro, where she had always lived. She had a cheering greeting for all and as a companion was loved and esteemed. Besides her parents the deceased is survived by two sisters; Nellie Champaign, of the faculty of the Williamsport High School, and Louise Champaign, student at Mt. Holyoke College, South Hadley, Mass.; and one brother, George Champaign, of this borough. Her eldest brother, Lieut. W. Earle Champaign, died last November at a base hospital in France as a result of wounds received Sept. 26th during the battle on the Verdun sector. The remains were brought here Saturday evening and the funeral was held Monday afternoon, Rev. D. R. Evans, officiating; interment in the Wellsboro cemetery.
