Note: "The Daily and Sunday Review", Towanda, Feb. 7, 2002: On the morning of Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2002, Canton resident Charles K. "Chuck" Kendrick Rathbun passed away quietly at his residence on North Center Street after a brave and lengthy battle with cancer. He was 81 years of age. Born in East Troy, Dec. 28, 1920, he was the son of Kendrick and Ruby Kennedy Rathbun. Chuck was a graduate of Troy High School and had been employed locally as a foundry worker. He answered our nation's call to arms during World War 11, serving with the 806th Tank Destroyer battalion in the Philippines. Chuck served an additional tour of duty stateside as a military police officer. He later returned to Bradford County and was employed by Troy Engine and Machine Co. In the mid 1950s Chuck relocated to the Elmira area and was employed by Westinghouse until his retirement in 1981. He was for many years an active member of the Elmira Heights American Legion post. He was a quiet, unassuming man, content with the simple pleasures of life. He enjoyed square dancing, camping and traveling, especially trips to Florida. For the past 26 years he was married to the former Geraldine Morgan. In earlier times, Chuck pursued a slightly more adventuresome pastime, that of learning to pilot small aircraft in and out of the Chemung Airport. But in recent years the simple pleasures of home and family were all that he desired. Chuck is survived by his beloved wife, Geraldine, at home; sons, Gary Rathbun of Anthony, Fla., Charles G. Rathbun of Troy, Dennis (and Harriet) Rathbun Sr and Larry D. Rathbun, all of Columbia Cross Roads; stepchildren, Dale (and Beverly) Selleck of Granville Summit, Imogene (and Bruce) McNeal of Canton, Mary (and George) Henderson of York, Pa., Debbie (and Dennis) Welch of Troy and Gail (and David) Mattocks of Troy; a sister, Mary Chamberlain of Troy; grandchildren David Foster, Kenneth Rathbun, Gary (and Nannatte) Rathbun, Nick (and Connie) Rathbun, Susan (and Paul) Tatem, Bridgette (and Dale) Brown, Dennis Jr. (and Mary) Rathbun, Darin (and Kristi) Rathbun, Marie (and Kim) Jennings, Loretta (and Joe) Owen, and Lacy Rathbun; step-grandchildren, Janet (and Mark) Harvey, Wyatt (and Doty) Selleck, Albert (and Denise) McNeal, Jason Mattocks, Holly Lane and Jolene Mattocks; 13 great-grandchildren and 21 step-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. The viewing will be Friday, Feb. 8, from 1 to 2 p.m. at Morse and Kleese Funeral Home Inc., 40 N. Center St., Canton. Funeral services will follow at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Kenneth Marple officiating. Interment will follow in Bradford County Memorial Park.
