Note: COURIER JOURNAL Crescent City, Fla February 23, 1983 p. 8 Deaths/ Mrs. Jessie Johnson Mrs. Jessie R. Eubanks Johnson, age 94, widow of the late Wilbur H.S. Johnson, former Mayor of Crescent City. and owner and publisher of the Crescent City Journal and West Volusia Journal, died Thursday, Feb. 17, at Lakeshore Nursing Home, Crescent City. She and Mr. Johnson moved to Crescent City in 1925 from Macon, Ga. Mrs. Johnson was born and raised in Aiken County, S.C. and was the daughter of Samuel D. and Mary Etta Eubanks, who were a well known pioneer family of Aiken. Mrs. Johnson served as president of the Crescent City Woman's Club when it celebrated its 50th anniversary of its charter. She was a former president of the school PTA She was the oldest member (in age) of the Howe Memorial Methodist Church and served as president of the Woman's Society of Christian Service, receiving an honorary Life Membership and pin for her outstanding service. She taught the Young Adults Sunday School class for many years. Mrs. Johnson became the publisher and manager of the Journal for several years after Mr. Johnson retired and went into the gas and appliance business. She was among the first to plant dogwood trees on the parkway and yard at her former residence on Prospect St. many years ago. Several beautiful dogwood trees in the city are seedlings obtained from these original trees. These original trees sparked the interest of many local citizens who planted dogwood trees that today are seen throughout the city. Mrs. Johnson is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Mary J. Thompson of DeLand; a sister, Mrs. Kate Morgan of Valdosta; Ga.; a grandson, Warren Thompson of Germantown, Tenn.; a granddaughter, Mrs. Judi T. Moore of Brentwood, Tenn. and four great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Clayton Frank & Sons Funeral Rome was in charge of local arrangements..
