Notes
a. Note:   Kate Irene Eubanks Morgan "Memories" as told by Kate Irene The earliest time I remember is when we moved from down south of Aiken County to the land where Papa owned now. It was in the pasture and when we drove up in the wagon we drove by persimmon trees and Jessie and I saw all these persimmons on the ground. We could hardly wait to get out of the wagon to pick some up and Papa held me and let Jessie get ahead as I was younger. A frame house - she imagined colored people lived in it. He built the house later where they lived until after his death. He built it in parts. Kitchen built off from the house. Porch was covered out to the kitchen. They ate in the kitchen and when Santa Claus came he always left our gifts on the kitchen table. Had a smoke house, walled up gardens, 2 veg gardens, 2 barns, had a lot where mules and horses could run around and each mule & horse had their own stall. Had well water. Papa had a box by the well and when you pump water he had an iron pipe that emptied into the horse trough as water for the horses. He had all kind of fruit trees, May plums, peaches, (peach orchard, get ripe at different times) pears, apples and scupporon vines, cherries (big nice black cherries). School Had a one room country school with one teacher who taught grammar school students. It was where Pentecost Church is now. We walked back and forth to school. First grade - there was a little old Ford boy - a queer looking little boy and he kept looking at me and one day he said I could swallow you whole. 2nd grade - first time Papa put a switch on me - we passed by Miss Clara Harrigals and she had plum trees and the plums were hanging over and almost reaching the road. Mama picked some up and ate them and Miss Clara saw her and told Papa and he switched her saying she shouldnt have done that. As kids we had all kinds of swings - some went around and around and some swung back and forth and see saws. and sometime later Arthur got a cross tie and buried it in the ground and left 3 feet above ground. In the center they drove a spike and put a heavy 2x4 and put on each end and drove a sturdy board to hold to and the boys pushed you around and around. No electricity in the country and had no way to keep milk & butter cold. He build a little house near the pump and ran a pipe through it and drew cool water and let it run in the pipes and it would run out the other end. When Mama made churns of butter Mama would tie a long string to a sack and let the butter down in the well and secure it to the side of the well. In one of the buggy houses it had a floor above - the boys would say they were going out to sleep in that shelter because it was cool. I planted corn, planted peas. Papa showed me how much to put in a hill & how far apart. A colored man would make and lay off the rows straight. Another child would come along and cover up the row with a plow. The girls did the planting & the boys did the plowing. **************************************************************** THE VALDOSTA DAILY TIMES Valdosta, Georgia November 1985 Mrs. Kate Eubanks Morgan died Wednesday after a long illness on her 98th birthday.
