October Term, 1798: The following are the presentments of the Grand Jury of the county of Jefferson: WE present as a public nuisance the Augusta Southern Centinel, and as a public grievance, the editor and printer thereof; for suffering to be inserted therein, anonymous and _______pieces against the chief magistrate of this state: A man whose abilities on every occasion have been honestly exerted for the benefit of his fellow citizens; whose services have done honor to his country, and on whose integrity and conduct, we have the most perfect reliance. Moreover such scurrilous publications appear to be intended to take away the confidence of the people in the government of our country; which, when avowed publications, much less anonymous scribblers, are permitted to do, it is no longer liberty, but the licentiousness of the press. And we conceive the said Printer to have been tantalizing the inhabitants of this county, and insulting the public in general, when he impressed the late Legislature with an _____, that he meant to establish a press in the town of Louisville. On the oath of VALENTINE HATCHER, we present Matthias Dollun (sp?) for __________ a floor from Jean Dawkiss. J.B. Spivey, John Gamble, W.B. Lochman, Wm. McGahee, John Cowart, Wm. Hardwick, Jno.
