On reaching manhood, Frederick Hatcher located in Cumberland county, Virginia, where he was a prominent planter and slave owner. He was a member of the Cumberland committee of safety during the Revolution. He was a member of the Established Church, and was for many years vestryman of Lyttleton parish. He died in Cumberland county, where his will was probated June 23, 1783. Marshall , Deputy Clerk Hard copy on file ********************************* [Cumberland County Deed Bk 3 1760-1765 Deed Bk 4 1765-1771 Reel 2] Hatcher p. 256-257 to Hatcher Know all men by these presents that I Frederick Hatcher of the parish of Southam in the county of Cumberland in consideratin of the sum of four shillings to me in hand paid by my mother Susannah Hatcher at and before the sealing and delivery of these presents the receipt whereof I do hereby acknowledge have bargained rented and lent unto my said mother Susannah Hatcher one negro slave named Sarah for and during her natural life and for the further consideration of the sum of five more to me in hand paid by Archibald Hatcher Drury Hatcher Elizabeth Hatcher Susannah Thompson and Judith Hatcher the receipt whereof I do hereby acknowledge have bargained sold released and confirmed unto my aforesaid brothers and sisters the abovesaid Archibald Hatcher Drury Hatcher Elizabeth Hatcher Susannah Thomsom and Judith Hatcher the reversion and remainder of the said negro slave Sarah and her increase to be equally divided them after the death of my said mother Susannah Hatcher or amoungst such of my brothers and sisters aforesaid as shall be then living or their legal representatives provided they shall then of age or married, but if my said mother Susannah Hatcher should die before my abovesaid brothers and sisters severally arrive at lawful age or are married it is further agreed betwixt the parties to these presents that the said negro Sarah and her increase shall remain in trust for the purpose aforesaid in the hands of such person or persons as my said mother Susannah Hatcher shall appoint for that purpose until my said brothers and sister each respectively arrive at the age of twenty one years or are married and shall be then equally divided amongst them as aforesaid To have and to hold the said negro slave Sarah and her increase by these presents bargained sold released granted and confirmed unto the only proper use and behalf of the said Archibald Drury Elizabeth Susannah Thomson and Judith Hatcher their heirs and assigns forever freely quietly peaceably and entirely without any contradiction claim disturbance or hindrance of me my heirs or assigns so that neither I the said Frederick Hatcher or any other for me or in my name any right title interest or demand of in or to the said slave or her increase ought to exact challenge claim or demand at any time or times hereafter but from all actions right claim demand possession and interest thereof shall be wholly barred and excluded by force and virtue of these presents and I the said Frederick Hatcher for myself my executors and administrators the said slave unto the said Archibald Drury Elizabeth Susannah Thomson and Judith Hatcher their executors administrators or assigns against me the said Frederick Hatcher my executors administrators and assigns forever will defend by these presents In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 25 day of June 1768. Will Book 2 page 317,318 In the name of God Amen I Frederick Hatcher of the parish of Littleton in the county of Cumberland being of sound mind and memory do make and ordain this my last will and testament in manner and form following. First I hand unto my wife Sarah Hatcher during the time she continues my widow the full of the land and plantation whereon I now live also my negros stocks of every kind and household furniture. She whereon do raise school and maintain my children and after her marriage or death I give the same as follows. I give unto my son John Hatcher what he has already in possion. (mispelled in will) I give unto my daughter Susanah Hobson what she has already in possession. I give unto my son Benjamin Hatcher and to his heirs forever 100 acres of land lying on the south side of the road to join (?) the lands of Josiah Thompson and David Burbon and by a line to be run from the road to my line next to appraisal(?) tax(?) river(?) also one negro boy named Bob and one sorrel colt. I give unto my son Frederick Hatcher and to his heirs forever the plantation whereon I now live with remainder of the tract of land also one negro boy named Shefs (?) and one desk(?) I give unto my daughter Mary Hatcher one negro girl named Nan. I give unto my daughter Betty Hatcher one negro boy named Peter. I give unto my daughter Sarah Hatcher one negro girl names Hanah. If either of my children above named die without heir my will is that the part of such dying may be equally divided amongst my three youngest children. If either of my two sons Benjamin Hatcher or Frederick should die without heir I give their part of the land to my son Henry Hatcher to him and his heirs forever. I give the negros Stocks and household furniture lent my said wife and not before mentioned to my children on the other side to such of my children named on the other side as she may think proper by gift in her life or by will at her death except my son John Hatcher and my daughter Susanah Hobson who has received their share of my estate.
