We cannot find any earlier reference to him except that his will indicates he owned land in Burke County [whose records were destroyed in the mid 1820's]. The Fourteenth day of April in the year of our Lord, one thousand seven hundred and ninety seven, I William Jackson of Columbia County, State of Georgia being veary sick and weak in Body, but of perfect mind and Memory, thanks be unto God for the same and calling to mind the Mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die do Make and ordain this my last Will and Testament, That is to say principally, and first of all I Give and recommend my Soul Into the hand of God that gave it end as concerning my body, I recommend It to the Earth to be buried in a decent manner at the Discretion of my Executors. And as touching such worldly Estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me in this life, I give and Devise and Disposing the same in manners and form following, that is to say, In the first place, I give and bequeath unto my well beloved Son, Richard the following Negroes Viz a Wench named Lucy and her ChIldren James, Pat, Lewis, Shade and George, which I have already granted unto him a Deed of Gift, to be raised and levied out of my Estate when he is of age.
