Note: THE VALDOSTA DAILY TIMES Wednesday, Dec. 8, 1999 Henry Thomas Sherman, M.D. VALDOSTA - Henry Thomas Sherman, M.D., 91, died Monday, Dec. 6, 1999 in the VA Nursing Home in Lake City, Fla. after a lengthy illness. He was born Aug.. 11, 1908 in Donalsonville to David Brady and Erin Mercer ( Jones) Sherman. Orphaned as an infant, he was raised by foster parents Jesse Benton and Nannie Lou (Davis) Jones of Blakely. Dr. Sherman graduated as Valedictorian from his class at Blakely High School in 1926. He attended Washington and Lee University and received his Bachelor of Science Degree from Emory University in 1930. He then received his degree of Doctor of Medicine in 1934 from Cornell University Medical College, where he served as present of his class. He interned on a mixed service basis for 18 months at the Second Division of Bellevue Hospital in New York City. He completed post graduate studies at Cornell University Medial College, Columbia University, New York University, the Edinburgh Postgraduate Board for Medicine, the University of Pennsylvania where he and 11 others were selected from around the world as private students of Dr. Henry L. Bockus, and then president of the American Society of Gastroenterology. Dr. Sherman was admitting physician at St. Joseph�s Hospital in Richmond, Va. in 1937 and he had a private practice of general medicine in Cairo from 1937-1942. He was Chief of Medicine at Williamson General Hospital in Williamson, W.Va. from 1948-1949. In 1949, he opened his private practice in internal medicine in Valdosta and was on the staff of Pineview General Hospital and South Georgia Medical Center until his retirement in 1975. During World War II, he served in the Medical Corps of the U.S. Army and was stationed in the South Pacific. He was released from active duty with the rank of captain. Dr. Sherman was a member of First Baptist Church where he has served as deacon, Youth Training Union Director, was president of the Scrap Iron Sunday School Class. Dr. Sherman was a member of the Bockus Alumni International Society of Gastroenterology. He was also a member of the Georgia, Southern, and American Medical Associations. He is listed in the Millennium Edition of Marquis Who�s Who in America. Dr. Sherman was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity and was former president of the Valdosta Toast Masters. One of Dr. Sherman�s greatest passions in life was his love of country. It naturally followed that he was involved in local grassroots political efforts on behalf of conservative candidates and causes. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Morgan Sherman, Valdosta, two sons and one daughter-in-law, Henry Thomas Jr. and Katherine Eager Sherman, Alpharetta; Mercer Lancaster Sherman, Valdosta; one daughter and son-in-law, Erin Sherman and Whittier Arnold Wright, Savannah; three grand children, Laura Katherine and Erin Ruth Sherman, Alpharetta; Nigel Whittier Wright, Savannah; two foster sisters, Dorothy Richards, Thomasville and Amzie Seals Tifton; one niece and five nephews. His brother, David Mercer Sherman, Albany, and daughter-in-law Debra Welch Sherman preceded him in death. Graveside services will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday in Sunset Hill Cemetery with the Rev Mac Weaver, officiating. There will be no visitation.
