Notes
a. Note:   John Bostick was born about 1710, based on information of the deposition of his father's will which states, John was thirty or there about. He was born in New Kent or Henrico Co., Virginia. He died in 1767 in St. Paul Parish Georgia, which became Richmond Co. in 1777. Augusta is the county seat of Richmond Co. John was in Goochland Co., Virginia in the 173O's. John also lived for several years in Pittslyvania Co., Virginia (Pittslyvania was formed from part of Halifax Co.). JOHN BOSTOCK, 400 ac. Instituted 16 Jun 1740. Grantor (seller) William Arnold of Goochland Co., aged 40 years or thereabouts, being sworn on the Holy Evangelists of Almighty God, has deposeth and saith that William Bostik, late of this county deceased, did on the 30 day of December last, in his last will and testament in writing, and signed, sealed and published the same in the presence of three witnesses: that is to say; Valentine Bostik, this deponent and Elizabeth his wife, who subscribed their hands to the said will in the presence of the testator who was then of sound mind and memory according to the judgement and belief of this deponant and, according to the best of his memory, the testator had by his said will, disposed of his estate in the following manner." Sworn before: William Mayo, Daniel Stoner (followed by deposition of John Bostock; agreeing with deposition of William Arnold)." (src. AFAS VOL VII, GOOCHLAND COUNTY, VIRGINIA, pg. 61) Cumberland County, VA was made from Goochland County in 1748; Goochland County was taken from Henrico County in 1728. William Arnold, Sr. who died in Cumberland County in 1774, was in Goochland County before Cumberland County was formed. John Bostick married Elizabeth Chesley. Tradition is that she was a Chesley; no proof was found, although they named a son Chesley and there were several Chesley Bostick's in later generations. Some researchers report there is no proof Elizabeth ever went to Georgia. This assumption is based on her being in Pittsylvania Co., Virginia in 1777, relinquishing her dowry rights to property that John had previously sold. Deed Bk. 4, Pg. 124. Elizabeth also acknowledge her dowry rights in Pittsylvania Co. on 3 Apr. 1775, deed Bk. 4 Pg. 255, pertaining to 404 acres William Bostick of North Carolina (son of John and Elizabeth (Chesley) Bostick) sold to John Cagle of Virginia. This record states that the 404 acres was granted to John Bostick, deceased, by patent, 23 May 1763. John Bostick was granted 250 acres, located about eight miles north of Augusta. He received a 2nd grant of 250 acres on 1 Jan. 1765, bounded on the North by the Savannah River. Ref.: English Crown Grants in St. Paul Parish Georgia. It is not known that he ever lived in Georgia. It is this researchers opinion that John and Elizabeth Bostick both died in Virginia We do know that John's wife was an Elizabeth, as evidenced by several land transactions in Pittsylvania Co, VA after John's death. On 24 Mar 1775 [Pittsylvania Co Deed Book 4, pg 124] Elizabeth Bostick of Pittsylvania Co. releases, quit claims all right on titles whatsoever to that land that Valentine Hatcher sold Sylvester Adams in Pittsylvania Co that lies on the Dan River which he had of John Bostick, her husband, containing 200 acres. Then, on 3 Apr 1775, Elizabeth (she signed with an x), relict of John Bostick, deceased, acknowledged full satisfaction of John Cargile for her right of dower in land granted her husband in 1763. John and some of his family moved ca. 1763 to St. Paul Parish, GA. Land documents corresponding to this date are recorded in Pittsylvania Co., VA (DB 4, p. 125), wherein Elizabeth released her right to land which John bought from his son-in-law, Valentine Hatcher. In 1763, he was granted 250 acres of land about 8 miles above Augusta, GA, and another 250 acres in 1765 (bordering the Savannah River on the north). He petitioned for another land grant of 150 acres 4 miles below Augusta, GA at Rocky Creek, which included islands in the creek. His petition stated he had 2 sons and 1 Negro to work the land. In 1765, his son, Chesley Bostick, petitioned for a grant of 100 acres 4 miles below Augusta at Beach Ridge and was later granted another 400 acres near the first 100 acres. His petition stated he had recently arrived with his wife, 3 children and 2 Negro. These land grants are documented in English Crown Grants in St. Paul Parish, GA (by Marion R. Hemperly); from genealogical records of Raymond Harrison Bostick of San Antonio, TX; and from Copeland, Bostick, Patton & Allied Families by Virginia Copeland Jantz of Waco, TX.
