EDGECOMBE, FRANKLIN, GRANVILLE, HALIFAX, HERTFORD, MARTIN, NASH, NORTHAMPTON, WARREN, AND WASHINGTON COS., N. C., AREA, 1722-1741 In a 20-year period (1722-41 ), over 500 live stock marks were recorded in Bertie County Court. At that time, livestock roamed freely through the woods and fields, and some sort of identification was necessary in order to know who owned what, and which. (To protect gardens and crops, some sort of a brush, or wooden or rail fence was necessary.) No two marks were identical. (The branding of cattle in the western states a century later was something similar.) Here are some sample live stock marks as taken from these Bertie records: "Coll. William Maule came into Court and Records his Mark Vizt. a Close Crop in the left [ear ED.] and Two nicks under the right. Granted." "Isaak Hill Esqr. came into Court and Records his Mark Vizt." a square in the upper side of the Right ear and [an?] Under Square in the left." Parts of the 40-page listing of "Bertie Co. N. She was 84 at the time of the affidavit. It has been discover that the widow Rachel Lavender Bryan, widow of Thomas Bryan, son of Hardy Bryan, died 1760, married second Abraham Bassett Simons with a daughter Polly [Mary] Simons by his former marriage. Thomas and Rached Bryan had three daughters Mary, Sarah, and Penelope. Since John Bush was a grandson of Mary Bryan Bush and the Misses Bryan were grandaughters of Hardy Bryan since these were cousins it makes Hardy Bryan and Mary Bryan Bush brother and sister, children of Edward and Christian Council Bryan.[E.W. Dehuff] William Bryan, son of John and Sarah Bryan married Alice Macland and had the following children, born before 1705: Needham, John, Mary and Alice. Susannah Bryan who married John Bush [was a son of Hardy who was a brother of William W.,] was a granddaughter of this Needham Bryan. William W. Bush is a second cousin of Needham Bryan I.
