a. Note:   lTHE BROTHERS, EDWARD BUSH AND JOHN BUSH OF GRANVILLE COUNTY, SC, were the sons of William Bush of Johnston (later Dobbs) County, North Carolina. MILITARY: Edward Bush was in his teens in 1754, he is listed as serving in the Colonial Army "from North side of Trent from Higgans Bridge to head of river under the command of Capt. Lewis Bryan. North Carolina. LAND PURCHASE: WINTON (BARNWELL) COUNTY DEED BOOK I-A Edward Bush bought from Martin Fryer, of Granville County, South Carolina, 100 acres on the Savannah River, granted 7 December 1755 to Christinia Houseman in [sic] the wife of F. Kauffman, bounded on the NE by Ralph Wilson's land, August 7, 1767 for 500 pds.. Barnwell County, South Carolina Deed Bk. 1-A, pp 67-69. Proved by Edward Bush before John Dick. JOHN BUSH of Granville County, South Carolina, planter, to NATHAN WILLIAMS, Johnston County, 45 pounds proclamation money, 159 acres in Johnston County formerly called Craven County on a branch of Mill Creek the said Branch formerly called a creek, beginning at a White Oak running South 35 poles, East 200 poles to a Pine: South 60 degrees West to a blazed Oak at the Branch in the line: along a line of blazed tree down the branch to a Gum on the Creek: down the course of said creek to first stake ...being the lower part of a tract granted to JAMES SIMONS by his Majesties patent date March 18, 1741 and deeded from said SIMMONS to WILLIAM BUSH February 14, 1746 and said WILLIAM BUSH being deceased the above said land descended to EDWARD BUSH the oldest son of said BUSH and he being deceased the same (land) descended to JOHN BUSH. Witnesses: DAVID LEE, RICHARD HILL, and EZEKIEL WILLIAMS. JAMES SIMONS' LAND IN NORTH CAROLINA: Patent Book 5 Crown to JAMES SIMONS 12 March 1740, 319 acres in Craven (later Johnston and then Dobbs) on the South side of Neuse River and Mill Creek, joining the creek. After William died in Johnston Co., his sons Edward and John and his brother Isaac moved to South Carolina. [Johnston Co., North Carolina Abstracts: Deed Books 1759-1771, page 88, no. 530.] John Bush of Granville, South Carolina sold land that had been inherited by his brother Edward, deceased, from their father William and then passed on to John when Edward died. Dated April 3, 1770. Charleston, South Carolina [Will Book 12-B, page 568.] 1770: Edwards will stated that he was of Granville Co., South Carolina and mentions his uncle Isaac. [The Bush Family as Descended from John and Mary Bryan Bush of North Carolina by Elizabeth Willis DeHuff, page 77, states that Isaac Bush moved to South Carolina about 1765.] Will dated 4-25-1769 which mentions wife, Sarah, mother Mary Castellaw, brother, John Bush, sister, Zilpha Williams, cousin Isaac Bush, Jr. son of honored Uncle Isaac Bush and "trusted and well beloved brother, Ezekiel Williams. Edward Bush's will dated 25 April, 1769 is recorded in Charleston, South Carolina, Will Bk. 12-B, p.568. It states that he was of Granville County, Planter, and names wife SARAH, to whom he bequeathed "Plantation on the Savannah River," which was left in the care of ROBERT LEE;" to mother MARY CASTELLAW 280 pds; to brother JOHN BUSH, 100 acres of land [not described] and a negro fellow; to sister Zilpah Williams, 1 negro; to "Cousin ISAAC BUSH, Jr. Son of Honoured Uncle ISAAC BUSH," a negro; Residue divided between my brother JOHN and sister ZILPHA. Exrs.: "uncle ISAAC BUSH and Trusty & well beloved brother Ezekiel Williams." Wits.: ISAAC BUSH, OWEN O'DANIEL and WILLIAM CASTELLAW. Recorded Will Bk. 1767-1771, p. 324." WILL OF EDWARD BUSH In the Name of God, Amen, the 25th day of April 1769. Granville was the fourth of these counties and stretched out almost the total length along the border of Georgia. All four of these counties were discontinued in 1769, but some of the older settlers still used the Granville County name in some of their later documents. One of the original "counties" created by the Crown for administrative purposes, Granville extended from the Combahee River in the north to the Savannah River in the south. All records for this area were filed in Charleston.
