Note: John Haynes was born before 1778. Census records for John Haynes do not reflect correctly his birth year considering the birth years of his children. They suggest the birth year to be between 1780 and 1790, yet his son Henry's census record shows him to be born between 1796 and 1798. He died after September 1830. His will was signed/recorded on September 27, 1830 in Barnwell District, South Carolina. Reasons for assuming that this is the same John Haynes who married Edy (Green) Bates, widow of Andrew Bates, Jr.: John Haynes lived near the Greens, and no other Haynes' were found living in the vicinity. John's wife had is not mentioned in his will , but she is believed to have been Edy Green, daughter of William Green named in his will as Edy Haynes and the widow of Andrew Bates, Jr. John Haynes must have been previously married, for the 1800 Barnwell County, South Carolina census shows Edey Bates as head of household on page 50B, line 7. Apparently Andrew, her husband, had died before 1800 and she had not yet married John Haynes. In fact, John Haynes is not listed in this census among the heads of household. Included in Edey's household were 3 males under 10, I male 16-26, 1 female under 10, I female (besides herself) 16-26. In the 1810 census, Barnwell county, John Haynes (sic) is listed as head of household in age bracket 26-45, and a female age 26-45, presumed to be his wife Edey. Also in the household were 2 males under 10, 2 males 10-16, 1 male 16-26, 2 females under 10, 2 females 10-16, and 10 slaves. In the 1830 census, John Haynes (sic) record (p. 125), shows him to be age bracket 40-50 and with no female over the age of 20. This seems to suggest that his wife Edey was by now deceased. Others in this family were 1 male 10-15, 1 male 20-30, 1 female 5-10, 1 female 10-15, 2 females 15-20, and 24 slaves. In the 1840 census, John had died, and the only Haynes record found in the Barnwell County census that year was that of his son, John H. Haynes . John H. was shown to be in the age bracket 30-40, his wife 20-30, and one male under 5, also eight slaves (2 males under 10, 3 males 24-36, 1 female 10-14, 1 female 24-36, 1 female 55-100). John H. Haynes is shown as head of household in the 1850 Barnwell County, South Carolina census, hh# 981/981, p.388B. John H. Haynes 43 - M - Planter; Amanda 35- F; John 10- m; Chris 7- M; Martha 5- F; Nancy Copeland 60 - F can't read or write Their neighbors included; Isaac Bush, George Boatright, E.J. Williams, Thos Dicks, Jos. Green, and Stephen Bush (who had a daughter named Amanda). In 1785, a John Haynes lived in District #17 of the Goshen Swamp area in Duplin County, North Carolina. This swamp is a major tributary of the Northeast Cape Fear River. It forms in the Sutton-town community of Sampson County and enters Duplin in the extreme northwestern corner. ("navigation on Goshen Swamp, Duplin County, N.C. - 1785" by Tom Byrd in NCGSJ 3(l):2-7. What makes this an intriguing bit of infromation is that a John Beck was one of the committee members appointed to inspect the Goshen area for the feasibility of a navagation project; and in the same district with John Haynes (sic) are found Wiliam Beck, overseer, John Beck Sr's " two negro fellows"; Stephen Beck. Two South Carolina Land Grants issued in 1787 are recorded for John Haynes. Vol. 18, p. 218 and Vol. 17, p. 49 are the references given in Vern's Index to South Carolina Land Grants. (Ronald Vern Jackson, Index to South Carolina Land and Grants, 1784-1800) (1977. Utah: Acclerated Indexing Systems). Listed in the same volume was a grant to Moses Haynes, vol.5, p. 451, issued also in 1787. In 1797, a South Carolina Grant of 84 acres is recorded in Vol. 70 (Class 02) for John Haynes (sic), and in 1785, Moses Haynes had an earlier grant of 451 acres in South Carolina, recorded in Vol. 5. At least two of these grants were described as being on Upper Three Runs where John and his family lived. ********************************************** Will of John Haynes South Carolina Barnwell District } In the name of God Amen.
