Note: 1765: Named in will of Uncle Alexander Shaw as son of Martha Shaw Newman. ITEM I Will and Bequeath the other one third part of my Personal Estate to my Beloved Sister Martha Newman During her natural Life & at her Demise to Her Issue John George Alexander & Susannah Newman & Ann Newman now Filput Martha Newman other wise Smith to be equally divided between them to them and their Heirs forever. April 16, 1765 ********************************************* John Newman was murdered by the Tories in the 39th year of his age. Aug 1781 John Newman was killed by a Tory named Bill Conway who lay in wait for him as he, old Galphin and Paddy Carr were returning from a muster at Cracker's Neck where Newman had received a commission that day. At the first hail of gun fire, Galphin & Carr put spurs to their horses and fled. John Newman was on a mare who refused to move. He was shot dead. His brother, Alexander Newman, came up soon after and in the retreat of the Tories, they shot him in the Back, but he survived. October the Court met according to Adjournment Present Aaron Gillett John C. Smith Daniel Green Thomas Knight James Fair William Bufort) Esquires Ordered that the Clerk employ a proper person to make a Jury Box for the use of this County to contain six divisions each division to be four inches square, to have covers for each division and to have two good locks with keys, that the same be compleated against the next Court & the cost to be defrayed by the County. The Court proceeded to the choice of Constables for this County when Henry Cannon, James Halcomb, Henry Mills, James Montgomery, William Creech, John Ward, William Woodcock and Charles Wheeler were appointed to act as Constables for one year and that the Clerk issue summonses for each of them to appear at the next Court to be qualified for that Office. Henry Mills and Charles Wheeler appeared personally in Court and qualified for the Office of Constable for one vear. Ordered that Henry Mills and Charles Wheeler serve the processes issued out of this Court until the meeting of next Court. Ordered that the Clerk employ a proper person to make six staffs for the Constables and for the use of this County, that they shall be six feet in length and the cost defrayed by the County. Mr. William Vince delivered into Court the Bond and Security required by Law which was acknowledged in open Court by all the parties and Ordered to be recorded. Ordered that Mr. William Vince take the Oath of Office prescribed by Law which was done accordingly. Whereas Joseph Vince, Esq., has declined acting as a Magistrate for thie County, the Court proceeded to appoint another to act in his place when the Court appointed Nathaniel Abney. Ordered that all the Magistrates of this Court meet at this place on the first Monday in December in order to fix on a proper place in this County to erect a Court House and other public Buildings. The Jury being sworn to wit James Gedden, Elisha Abston, Reuben Roundtree, Henry Woods, Benj. Blunt, Wm. Adams, Geo. Cope, Isham Jordan, Geo. Crossey, Jno. Platt, Silas Roles, and Daniel Philpot, returned a verdict. We find the Deed made by Josias Wallace to Sarah Wallace, now Sarah Shields, a fraud. Silas Rowls, Foreman. Wm. Robison, Wm.
