Salley, Jr., secretary ***************************************************** 1779: GREEN William 1779 Colony, SC Resident Old 96th DISTRICT He came to South Carolina before 1779, the Old 96 District. [Colonial Residents of South Carolina 1716- 1783.] He acquired 1900 acres of land in Barnwell County. He was very active in public affairs. His will is recorded Jan. 13, 1815, Barnwell County, South Carolina. William and Pherby lived near the "three Runs" in what was called "Greenland" Plantation in Richland Township, Barnwell District. This area was taken over for the Atomic Energy Commission, Savannah River Plant in November 1950. He was one of the commissioners to build the first Court House pillery and jail for Winton District, later Barnwell District, and presently Barnwell County. Sixty -five families with the name of Green were in South Carolina in the 1790 census. Only one spelled it Greene. Eight of the sixty-five families lived in the Orangeburg District at that time; Daniel, Drury, Elizabeth, Elkanah, Grace, John, and two Williams were their names. Tarleton Brown mentions John, Benjamin and an elderly Green whose son fought with him in his "memoirs". He does not give his name. The following data is based on old records found in Barnwell County. John either died without leaving any records or moved away. After 1850, Benjamin's family "disappeared". As William Green left many descendants and was very active in public affairs, we will begin with him..." [The Manning Papers obtained from the Barnwell County Public Library] William Green was a member of the Grand Jury, Barnwell District, South Carolina. [ Minutes of the Court of Ordinary, Winton District, SC, p. 54] He is registered as the Head of one of the Founding Families of the State of South Carolina. William and Feriby Green's burial site has not been found. It is probable that they were buried on their home place as was the custom at that time. ********************************************************************* 1784; WINTON (BARNWELL) COUNTY DEED BOOK I-A Pp. 235-238: 20 & 21 Oct 1784, Charles Wheeler, planter, of Orangeburgh District to Ann Collins, planter, of same, for L 4000.. 100 acres on Upper Three Runs...
