Aurelius received his education in his native town and was still attending school at the time taht Abraham Lincoln first called for volunteers for the civil war. He at once enlisted in the Twelfth Regiment, New York Volunteers, and served for three months. He then returned to Pennsylvania and reenlisted in Co. I, One Hundred and Forty First Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers, with the rank of first sergeant, a post which made him drill sergeant for the entire regiment for a considerable amount of time. The One Hundred and Forty-first Pennsylvania saw much active service during the remainder of the war, and young Mr. Adams took part in manty of the most important battles, among which was the tremendous struggle at Gettysburg, when he acted as Captain of his company. At Gettysburg he was shot through the shoulder and incapacitated fore further active service. After spending considerable period in a military hospital, he finaly recovered enough to be honorably discharged and sent home. He married Sarah Jane Mauger, and they were the parents of seven children. Mr. Adams was of distincly enterprising character, and shortly after experiences in the war he moved west and settled in the village of Medford, Taylor County, Wisconsin, where he was one of the pioneers. He took an extremly active part in affairs and has held many of the most important offices in the gift of his fellow townesman. His terms of office have been practically continous and he has held among others the post of county chairman, county supervisor, deputy clerk of the county court and deputy clerk of the county treasury, all in Taylor County.
