Note: [Markie~1.ftw] Michael Markiewicz, married and the father of two children, died Saturday P.M. at 2o'clock at his home 1504 Trade Street, from injuries received Friday night about 9:30 o'clock, at the hands of a mob of about 15 Hungarians, who attacked him and John Wesolik, with whom he was walking home. Their assailants used stones or bricks in striking that were used as slung shots, and knives. Wesolik was badly cut on the right arm, and both arms were black and blue from the bruises received in defending himself. Markiewicz was the worst injured of the two. He was pounded and cut all over his head and body. He made his way home as best as he could, and this morning was found lying in his back yard. Dr. Slusser was called and about noon notified the police that the man could not live. This was the first notice the police had that anything of a very serious nature had occurred and after an investigation into the facets of the case Chief Caneldy made the following arrests: Michael Hovath age 20 John Gergoes age 23 John Harvart age 22 Frank Barcleacz age 26 Joseph Nagz age 23 All the men under arrest are Hungarians. Markiewicz and Wesolik are Poles. The latter is foreman of the streetcar company's work gang and Markiewicz works under him. They were together in Muskovitz liquor house, on South Chapin street about 9p.m. when they became involved in a quarrel with some Hungarians over a pool game. Wesolik slapped one of the men on the face. They all went on the outside and the trouble continued until Officer VanLake coming up parted them and ordered all to go home. Weolik and Markiewicz started up Division Street and on the Grand Trunk property, in front of Drosden & Stanfield lumberyards, they were attacked by the crowd in the saloon and friends they had gathered. The assailants used the weapons already described and used them with disastrous effect. A post mortem examination was held over Markiewicz Saturday afternoon. Steven Kuslitch of about the same age as the others under arrest was also arrested Saturday afternoon while standing in front of the police station, charged with having a hand in beating Michael Markiewicz Friday night so that his injuries resulted fatal. The six men will probably have their preliminary hearing this morning before Mayor Schafer. They will be charged with murder in the first degree. Coroner Dugdale has taken the statements of Mrs. Markiewicz and John Wesolik, who was with him at the time of the trouble. Everything was substantially as given in Saturday's report. Markiewicz made his way home after the attack and his wife was made known of his condition and did what she could for him. He had gone out to the closet which was his cause of being out of the house. Dr. Dugdale found two large holes in Markiewicz head and fractures.
