a. Note:   Transcript of Etta's "History of the Morgan Family". In the late 1700 Jo hn & Lavinia Morgan came to America from Wales. They settled in a place ca lled Guymard, New York (now Graham) near Port Jervis, N.Y. He was a Wel sh miner and worked in the Erie Lead Mines at Guymard until it closed dow n. Then they bought a farm in Finchville, Orange Co. N.Y. There they liv ed the rest of their lives and raised 10 sons and 2 daughters. When the ol dest boy (John) grew up he married Mahalay Stevens from Sugar Loaf, New Yo rk and they became my grandfather and grandmother. As the boys became of a ge they left home, 2 of them went away to-gether to seek their fortunes a nd settled in Scranton Pa. where they were employed in the mines there. An other 2 went to Rockaway, New Jersey. Another 2 went to Hancock, New Yor k. They drove up to Hancock with great grandfather's team of horses. Anoth er 2 went to Jamestown. One of them always stayed with Great Grandfather a nd Great Grandmother. His name was Sam. When they left home my great grand mother gave each of them a Bible and they always wrote home once a week. T hey have been dead for some time and up the road from the farm house (whi ch is still standing) is the grave yard where most of them are burie d. My grandfather and grandmother are both buried in Westbrookville, New York, a short distance away. My grandmother, Mahalay ( Van Rensselear Stevens) and John Morgan lived most of their lives in or ar ound Westbrookville, New York. They raised a large family too, 6 boys a nd 5 girls. The oldest boy was my Dad, William Van Rensselear Morgan and f ollowing are the names of the rest of the family (all deceased)".
