He married Lucy Furnece in 1805 in Fleming Co., Kentucky and had their 1st child there. The births of their children indicate that they were in Ohio and Missour ibefore they finally settled in Daviess Co., Indiana. Most of the early settlers in Daviess Co. came from Kentucky. William H. eventually had 10 children. George Valentine was their 8th child. William H. may have been a bricklayer initially because his grandson Reily always said that he was the 3rd or 4th generation of bricklayers in his family.
William H. purchased 78 acres in Daviess Co. from the government land office in Vincennes in 1817. He also purchased a town lot in Washington,Indiana. (Initially called Liverpool, Indiana). The same year the Daviess County Circuit Court was established with a president judge and 2 associate judges. William H. was elected as one of the associate judges,a position he held until 1821. (One of the earliest cases that he heard was the murder of Thomas Eagle. In 1822 and 1823 William represented Daviess and probably Martin Co. in the State Legislature. The HonorableWilliam H. Routt was a justice of the peace in 1824 when he was elected president of the Board of County Justices. In 1826 a number of residents of Daviess Co., including William applied for and received approval to establish a lodge of Free Masons in Washington. It was called Charity Lodge No. 30. William H. may have had something to do with the town of Mount Pleasant, Indiana, which developed rapidly about 20 miles east of Washington. An 1829 survey shows that one of the 9 streets in the town was called Rout Street. His son Reily would also later live in the town.William died in 1841 and was buried on his farm near Washington.
