Notes
a. Note:   According WFT research, Tasmon father an illegitimate "bastard" named Gaines J. Boswell by a woman named Rachel Boswell. On the 1870 US Census the Cottons are living in the 2nd Civil District, Huntsville, Scott Co., TN (p. 239, dwelling 12). Those listed: Tazmon W. Cotton, 21, farmer; Mary Ann, 19; Mary J., 1; and Sarah T., 11 mos. Tazmon has $150 in real estate and $500 in personal property. All family members were born in Tennessee. Mary Ann is marked as being unable to read or write. On the 1880 US Census for TN (Scott Co., 2nd Civil Dist., p 232), Tasmon Cotton is listed with family in dwelling 254. Those listed: Tasmon Cotton, 32, farmer; Mary Ann, 30, keeping house; Polly J, 11; China, 10; Rosetta, 8; Sally Ann, 6; Emily, 4; Nancy E., 2; and Josephine, 1. All were born in Tennessee. *John and Jane Carson are living in the home adjacent to the Cottons. Scott Co, TN probate records include payments made from Tasmon's estate on Dec 28, 1900 to parties including $27.22 each to Sarah & Starling Terry, Emily & CH West, Polly Cotton, Nancy & RC West, Josie Strunk, Rosa & Joseph Branum, John Cotton, and Wayne Cotton. There were also a number of other payments to various companies, attorneys, etc. The administrator was Baty Keeton. The photocopy of this record was sent to me by the Scott Co. Hist. Soc., and appears to be only the last of such payouts from Tasmon's estate. Others were likely made as well as on that day only $450 was paid and Tasmon's estate was surely larger than that. It is also very likely that Tasmon submitted a written will, which would be quite informative if located.
