a. Note:   Thomas WRIGHT came to New Zealand in 1863, landing at Dunedin. He came to New Plymouth as a Military Settler on 25 Aug 1863 aboard the ship "GEELONG". For his services he was entitled to one town allotment and one farm section. His land grant was at Wairau Road and Thompson Street, AhuAhu and Castle Street Township, Oakura which he sold 30 Mar 1885 to RG Wood. He bought land at Lepperton. The following is the record held at New Plymouth Lands & Deeds Office: Dated 20 Oct 1866 Mr Thomas Jackson to Mr Thomas Wright Conveyance of Town Allotment No 75 Huirangi & Rural Allotment No 33 Huirangi District. This deed made the twentieth day of October one thousand, eight hundred and sixty six between Thomas Jackson of Manutahi in the Province of Taranaki in the colony of NZ a private in No2 Company Taranaki Military Settlers of the one part and Thomas Wright of Huirangi, Settler of the other part. 115 pounds paid by the said Thomas Wright to the said Thomas Jackson doth convey to the said Thomas Wright all that parcel of land containing by admeasurement two roods more or less being the town allotment No 28 on the plan of Manutahi township bounded towards the north by Roby Street 167 links towards the east by town allotment no 29 three hundred links towards the south by town allotment no 91 167 links towards the south by town allotment no91 167 links towards the west by town allotment 27 300 links and also all the piece of parcel of land containing by admeasurement 2 roods more or less being the town allotment no 25 on plan of Huirangi township bounded towards the north by Bayley Street. 50 acres rural allotment. Obituary: Taranaki Herald, Monday, January 3, 1916 There passed away at Lepperton on Saturday one of the oldest and most respected residents of that district in the person of Mr Thomas Wright. Mr Wright, who was in his eightieth year, was a native of Scotland and came to Otago in 1863. Shortly afterwards he came to New Plymouth as a military settler, and after living about two years in this town went to Lepperton, where he has resided continuously ever since. He passed through the troublous times of the later Maori War and endured the hardships incidental to settlement in what were then the backblocks of Taranaki. He has always been prominently identified with the work of the Methodist Church in North Taranaki. His death will be regretted by a large circle of friends. He leaves a widow and a large family, all grown up. Copy of Thomas Wright's Will I Thomas Wright of Lepperton in Taranaki in New Zealand, Farmer, hereby revoke all former Wills and Codicils made by me and declare that this is my last Will. 1. I appoint my wife Janet Wright, my son Alexander Wright and my daughter Isabella Wright (hereinafter called "my Trustees" to be the Executors and Trustees of this my Will. 2. I give to my wife absolutely all articles of household domestic or personal use belonging to me. 3. I give devise and bequeath all my freehold and leasehold lands and all the residue of my personal property whatsoever and wheresoever situate unto my Trustees upon the following trusts: (a) To pay my debts and funeral and testamentary expenses out of my personal estate: (b)To invest all principal moneys at any time during the lifetime of my wife belonging to my estate in any investments authorised by law and to pay the income thereof to my wife during her life: (c) To pay to my wife during her lifetime the nett rentals arising from any lease or leases of my lands given by me or after my death by my Trustees with my wife's consent: (d) To allow my wife during her lifetime to occupy and enjoy for her own use and benefit such of my freehold and leasehold lands as shall not for the time being be subject to any lease from myself or from my Trustees - she keeping the same in tenantable good order and repair and condition and paying all rent rates taxes and insurance in respect of same and keeping the insurable buildings thereon fully insured in the names of my Trustees against loss or damage by fire. (e) To allow my wife to have the use and enjoyment during her life of all my dairy herd and all other the live stock and dead farming stock thereon with power to my wife to sell and exchange such live stock or any part thereof so as to maintain a dairy herd and other live stock of equal value and of ordinary efficiency for dairying and other farm purposes And I direct that as soon as conveniently may be after my death my Trustees shall cause an inventory and valuation to be made of such dairy herd and all other live and dead stock and that the same shall be signed by my wife and retained by my Trustees and that a copy of such inventory and valuation signed by my Trustees shall be delivered to my wife And that upon the death of my wife her separate estate shall be liable to my Trustees to return or replace such dairy herd and other live and dead stock in accordance with the number and value set out in such inventory and valuation And that the same shall fall into and form part of my estate Provided always and I expressly declare that my Trustees shall not be required to see to the observance by my wife of any of the conditions upon which she holds the said lands and stock under this the third paragraph of this my Will and that they shall not be subject to any liability for impeachment of waste or otherwise whatsoever consequent upon her non observance of any such conditions as aforesaid. 4. Upon the death of my wife I direct that my surviving Trustees or Trustee or other the Trustees for the time being under this my Will shall hold my freehold and leasehold lands and the residue of my personal estate upon trust to sell call in and convert the same into money (with power at their discretion to postpone the whole or any part of such sale calling in or conversion) and thereupon to divide the nett proceeds (hereinafter called "my residuary estate") into One hundred equal shares to be paid as follows: To my wife six (6) shares To my daughter Isabella Wright twelve (12) shares To my daughter Annie Wright twelve (12) shares To my daughter Jane Wright twelve (12) shares To my son Alexander Wright twelve (12) shares To my son James Douglas Wright twelve (12) shares To my son Robert Wright eight (8) shares To my son Thomas Wright eight (8) shares To my son William Wright eight (8) shares To my daughter Janet Wright six (6) shares To my grandson Norman Cyril Wright four (4) shares And I declare that except as to the share of my grandson Norman Cyril Wright all such shares shall be deemed to have become absolutely vested in the respective beneficiaries aforesaid as at the date of my death Provided always and I hereby expressly direct and declare: (a) That if my wife shall die before me then my Trustees shall hold her shares of and in my residuary estate under this my Will upon trust for such person or persons and (if more than one) in such shares and generally in such manner as my wife shall by deed revocable or irrevocable or by Will or Codicil appoint and subject to such appointment in trust for all my children in equal shares Provided that upon default of any such appointment and so far as any appointment shall not extend if any child of mine shall die in my wife's lifetime leaving a child or children who shall survive her and being a son or sons shall attain the age of Twenty one years or being a daughter or daughters shall attain that age or marry under that age then and in every such case the last mentioned child or children shall take (and if more than one equally between them) the share which his her or their parent would have taken of and in the shares of my wife of and in my residuary estate as aforesaid. (b) That if any of my said children shall die in my lifetime leaving a child or children who shall survive me and being a son or sons shall attain the age of Twenty one years or being a daughter or daughters shall attain that age or marry under that age then and in every such case the last mentioned child or children shall take (and if more than one equally between them) the shares which his her or their parent would have taken of and in my residuary estate had such parent (my child) survived me. (c) That the four shares of and in my residuary estate hereby made payable to my grandson Norman Cyril Wright shall be held by my Trustees upon trust to invest the same until my said grandson shall have attained the age of Twenty one years whereupon he shall become absolutely entitled thereto And I direct that in the meantime my Trustees shall pay to him the annual income therefrom And I also declare that my Trustees may at any time or times before my said grandson shall have attained the age of Twenty one years in their sole and absolute discretion pay to my said grandson or otherwise apply for or towards his maintenance education advancement or benefit the whole or any part or parts of his presumptive shares of and in my residuary estate under this my Will And I also declare that the receipt of my said grandson for all payments by my Trustees of income and also for all payments (if any) in respect of his presumptive shares hereunder shall notwithstanding my said grandson's minority be a full and sufficient discharge to my Trustees for such payments. 5. I empower my Trustees or other the Trustees for the time being of this my Will but with the consent of my wife during her lifetime to let the whole or any part of my freehold or leasehold lands as aforesaid for any period not exceeding Three years at such rental and upon such terms and conditions as my Trustees shall deem advisable Provided that any such lease shall take effect within Six months from making the agreement therefor.
