Note:   Homestead Certificate No. 10849 Application 16903 Whereas these has been deposited in the General Land Office (United States a Certificate of the Register of the Land Office at Gainesville Florida, whereby it appears that, pursuant to the Act of Congress approved 20th May, 1862, "To secure Homesteads to actual settlers on the public domain, " and the acts supplemental hereto, the claim of Joel C. Mayo has been established and duly consummated in conformity to law for the North East quarter of Section 14, in Township four North of Range Seventeen West of Tallahassee Meridian in Florida containing one hundred fifty-nine acres and Six - Nine hundredths of an acre according to the Official Plat of the Survey of the said Land returned to the GENERAL LAND OFFICE by the SURVEYOR GENERAL: Now Know Ye, That is therefore granted by the UNITED STATES unto the said Joel C. Mayo the tract of above described. TO HAVE AND TO HOLD the said tract of land with the appurtenances thereby the said Joel C. Mayo and to his heirs and assigns forever. In testimony whereof I, Grover Cleveland President of the United States of America have caused these letters to be Patent, and the Seal of the GENERAL LAND OFFICE to be hereunto affixed. Given under my hand, at the City of Washington the 20th day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and ninety four, and of the Independence of the United States the one hundred and twenty first. WITNESSETH: That the said parties of the first part, for and in consideration of the sum of Three hundred Dollars to them in hand paid by the said party of the second part., the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, have granted, bargained and sold, to the said party of the second part, his heirs end assigns, forever, the following described land to-wit: The North East quarter of Section Fourteen Township Four North of Range Seventeen West containing (160) acres, Lying and being in Holmes County and State of Florida And the said parties of this first part, do hereby warrant the title to said land and will defend the same against the lawful claims of all persons whomsoever. And the said Lelia Mayo wife of the said J. C. Mayo upon a private examination by me, held separate and apart from her said husband, acknowledged and declared that she executed the same freely and voluntarily, and without fear or apprehension, compulsion or restraint, of or from her said husband for the purpose of relinquishing all her right of Dower in and to said described property. Railroad Co. traveling the panhandle of Florida. He met Georgia Hatcher in 1901 in Aiken, South Carolina while getting his "britches" repaired at her shop. They married and returned to Florida. For reasons unknown Georgia Hatcher Mayo took her two babies and left Joel Mayo about 1904 and returned to South Carolina and her family. She never spoke of Joel again. After her children were old enough to ask she told them that he was dead. After her death his portrait was found ripped in half in the bottom of her trunk. ******************************************************************** CHANCERY ORDER BOOK 2 page 46 In Circuit Court of Holmes County, First Judicial Circuit of Florida, In Chancery.
