He attended school in Sidney and graduated from Sidney High School in 1957. On June 1, 1958, he was united in marriage to Corlene (Cork) K. Ranck of Sidney and they had four children: Kristy, Kathy, Cindy and Michael. Jim attended the Commercial Extension Business College in Omaha and graduated in 1958. Mr. Leroy Canfield offered Jim a full time position as Assistant Manager at Canfield's Army Store where he worked that position and another part time job for the next five years so Cork could stay home and raise the girls. Jim and his family lived in LaVista until they moved back to Sidney in 1963. That same year, Jim purchased the feed store on the corner where NAPA is currently located, from Mr. Bill Long and changed the name to Jenkins Feed and Produce. For the next five years, Jim ground corn with an Arts Way Grinder and delivered the grain to area farmers. They also took in cream and eggs produced locally to be picked up by area distributors. The business was eventually moved to the cement building where Reilly Insurance is currently located. Then in 1968, Jim and Cork purchased the home they currently live in now. Jim managed the elevator in Sidney several years before managing the elevator in Percival for several more. Jim then came back to the elevator in Sidney. During that time, he also owned and operated a couple of grain trucks that he did drive himself from time to time. Jim eventually went back to managing the Sidney elevator until him and Cork both retired in December of 2000. Jim dedicated his life to his family and to working with agriculture in Southwest Iowa and became well known to many farmers with many of them becoming good friends through the years. He enjoyed helping many people throughout the years that he felt need a helping hand. Preceding Jim in death were parents Chester Jenkins, Helen Jenkins Orton, his in-laws Walter and Veta Ranck, brother in law Bob Ranck.
