Notes
a. Note:   Extract from 1881 Census Dwelling: Drumbeg Cottage Census Place: Drymen, Stirling, Scotland Marr Age Sex Birthplace Janet PATERSON M 71 F Old Monkland, Lanark, Scotland Rel: Head ((Wife)) Occ: Shepherds Wife Janet PATERSON U 31 F Drymen, Stirling, Scotland Rel: Daur Occ: Ag Lab Janet W. MC NAUGHTON 11 F Buchanan, Stirling, Scotland Rel: Gr Daur Occ: Scholar DRYMEN (Gartnabrodnack is in that part of it bounded on the south by the cart road from the Moor of Craigiebairn to Chapelaroch and on the North by the parishes of Aberfoyle and Buchanan.) In 1851 there were 7 occupants in Gartenbrodnack. The shepherd, Gavin Paterson, was 48 and his wife Janet was 41. Both had been born in Old Monklands, Lanarkshire. No occupation other than Shepherd's daughter is given for Agnes (17) or Susan (14), also natives of Old Monklands. John, aged 6, was at school and Janet was only one year old. The final resident was an eleven-month-old nephew, Peter Clark The last three were Drymen-born. In 1841, the house was Gartnabrodnack, and the residents were Gavin (35), Janet (25), Agnes (8) and Susan (4). QUESTIONS. Would a 31 y-o make a mistake and give her age as 25? Finlay Clark, who taught Uncle Hughie to drive, was reputedly a relative. Is the nephew, Peter Clark, his ancestor? In 1891 in the five-apartment Gateside Cottage, the sole resident was Janet Paterson, unmarried 37 y-o dairymaid, though on the Census night, her 41 y-o married sister, Susan McNaughton, was visiting. Ten years before, in the nearby Drumbeg Cottage, there had been three generations of Janets. Mrs Paterson (71), "head" of the household, was still denominated "Shepherd's Wife", married, not widowed; her daughter (31) was an "Agricultural Labourer", and Susan's 11 y-o daughter, Janet Watson McNaughton,(later Aunt Jen) was spending some of her formative years at her Grannie's. In 1861 at Drumbeg the same occupational and marital descriptions applied to the two Janet Patersons, who occupied the cottage, and they were 10 years younger.
