He served in the Union Army and was honorable discharded at Nashville, August 23, 1865. He was married Januuary 2, 1857, to Ann Maria Worth, and two children were born to them. Mrs. Austin died in 1878, and he was again married on June 6, 1880 to Sarah E. Ireland. Mark Ireland did a lot of the research for the Stearns family. Hiram's second wife was an Ireland.
