Notes
a. Note:   r 12, 1854 was 17. This would make her birth date 1837. This record is found in the Nicholas County, WV Marriages, 1817 - 1903.
Jane was widowed by the 1860 census. She is listed in the 1860 Webster County, WV census as Widow Jane Dennison, age 29. Her son, John E. Dennison is listed as 1 year old. Her occupation is listed as a domestic. She is living with James Hanna (age 66) and Malinda Hanna (age 55).
The census shows that the next door neighbors are Samuel Given (age 66) and Mary Given (age 59). These are her parents.
Stephenson and Associated Families, Chapter 1, March 1, 2000, page 2:
Jane Given was born on 10 May 1837, at Upper Glade, Nicholas County, Virginia, later Webster County, West Virginia. She was the third daughter and seventh of nine children of Samuel and Mary Given. She probably had a relatively comfortable life in her early years being a child in a family that was well off for that time and location. However, with the advent of the War Between the States many would suffer from the resulting deprivations. In looking back on what little can be discerned of Jane's life it appears that she may have had more than her share of troubles.
Jane married James A. Denison on 12 October 1854, in a ceremony performed by Rev. Sam Black (Nicholas Co., WV Marriage Records, Bk. 1, Pg. D). James Denison was born in Augusta County about 1830. A cursory research of the Denison Family in Augusta County suggests that he descended from John Denison, whose will was proved 28 October 1824, and who was survived by sons Samuel, John and Daniel. Others may have done research on this family and its ties to the families Paris, McClung and Henderson. Two children were born to James and Jane Denison, Samuel Given born in June 1856, who died on 11 May 1859, and John Elliott born on 25 November 1858 (Nicholas Co., WV, Birth Records, UWV Box 116). The mortality schedule of the 1860 census shows that James Denison died of consumption in November 1859 at age 30.
At the time of the 1860 census widow Jane Denison, age 23, and John E., age 1, were living with James and Malinda Hanna on a farm adjacent to that of her parents. Jane was listed as a domestic but had an estate of $100 dollars. Perhaps the Hannas were related to her late husband James as one would have expected her to move back to her parents large home.
Jane married John H. Overholt on 27 June 1861 (Pocohontas Co., WV, Marriage Book 3, pg 5). John was born in Rockingam County, VA on 2 February 1836 and moved with his family to Pocohontas County when he was young. In 1860 he owned a farm valued at $2500 and had a personal estate of $970. By 1861 the war had started and Samuel and Mary Given and Jane Overholt were forced to leave their home in Upper Glade and move to the community of Mossy Creek, north of Staunton, VA. It was here that Henry A. Overholt was born on 25 April 1862. John Overholt entered the Confederate army near Winchester, Frederick County, VA on 23 March 1862, and was assigned to Co. I, 5th Regiment of Virginia Infantry Volunteers. He was wounded on 25 August 1862 during the Second Manassas Battle and was sent back to Rockingham County where he died on 19 October 1862 (Confederate Military Service Records, National Archives, Washington, D.C.). Jane was left to care for two young sons. After her parents departure from Upper Glade their farm was sacked and burned by Union sympathizers. Mary died 3 May 1862, and Samuel died on the following July. Both are buried along with John Overholt in the cemetery of the Mossy Creek Presbyterian Church near Mt. Solon in Augusta Co., VA. In the course of six months, Jane had lost her husband, father, mother and brother John.
On 25 May 1864, Jane appeared with Adam Given in Augusta Court to file a deposition for the purpose of obtaining from the government of the CSA whatever money may have been due John Overholt at the time of his death for pay, bounty and other allowances (Confederate Military Service Records, National Archives, Washington, DC). The amount of $61.66 was found due. In her deposition she declared that she was living in Rockbridge Co. If she remained in Virginia after the death of her parents and husband, she had relatives from whom she could get help. Her sister Catherine and James Gibbs lived at Raphine and John and Matilda McClung lived near Steeles Tavern.
Note:   Jane Given's age when she and James A. Denison were married in Nicholas County, WV on Octobe
