Notes
a. Note:   !BIRTH: 1794 Dublin Ireland. (Compiler's comment: 1794 date is from Jerome PENDERGAST's (RIN132) Biography. Calculated from his tombstone age and death date, birth date would be 1791.) !PARENTS' FAMILY MRIN: # No research on earlier ancestors has been done by this compiler. NATURALIZATION: 23 October 1823 Harford County Maryland Court, age 29 years, native of Ireland. Photocopy in his ahnentafel file. This was the first knowledge this compiler had of his middle initial "M". This document also confirms his year of birth. !MARRIAGE: MRIN17 to Rosanna O'BRIEN-130, age 16 (estimated by census analysis) probably in 1826. !DEATH: Oct 1867, Oct. age 76 !BURIAL: On Pendergast lots Section H, #543/544 at New Cathedral Cemetery, Old Frederick Road, Baltimore, Baltimore Co. Maryland 21219 . Grave were moved to New Cathedral Cemetery July 1, 1887. In compiler's ahnentafel file folder 28-5 for this, his g-great grandfather, will be found a letter from the New Cathedral Cemetery dated May 28, 1996 enclosing charts of the Pendergast lots as well as photographs of the shaft and cross knocked down by a tree limb Oct 10, 1995 on the central monument of the graves of his son, James F. Pendergast and family. The following is the listing for Lot H-543: DATE NAME GRAVE July 1, 1887 John L. Pendergast 1 " " " Ellen Pendergast 2 " " ' Charles Pendergast 3 " " " Rosanna Pendergast 4 " " " Catherine Ahern 8 Nov 4, 1892 Mary A. Ahearn Aug 2, 1903 Ella Coleman Pendergast 6 Nov 5, 1907 Jerome A. Pendergast 5 !RESIDENCES: Settled in Susquehanna Lower Ferry (Havre de Grace), age 15, in 1809. Moved to Baltimore in 1838 Data from Baltimore City Directory page 394 (year is missing from photocopy in compiler's great grandparent's file fold- er, Louise L. Lynch-15/Charles H. PENDERGAST-14 - #4-14/4- 15). However, since Charles PENDERGAST is listed, it had to be prior to 1867, the year of his death: PENDERGAST, Anthony laborer rear 604 Light PENDERGAST Bros. & Co. (Jas. F. and Chas. H. PENDERGAST) ship'g merchs, 77 Smith's whf PENDERGAST, Charles, 27 n Calvert PENDERGAST, Chas. H. (P.,Bros.&Co.) 26 w Eager PENDERGAST, Mrs. Hester, tavern, 54 York PENDERGAST, Jas. F. (P.,Bros.&Co.) 33 w Eager PENDERGAST, Michael laborer 211 Vine PENDERGAST, Thomas huckster 14 Front n of Foundry !CENSUS: Maryland 1840 census index does not show any PENDERGASTs. Why this is so is not clear since Captain PENDERGAST moved to Baltimore in 1838 according to Jerome PENDERGAST's Biog- raphy. Maryland 1850 census index shows: PENDERGAST, Catherine - Bal 250 - 6th ward PENDERGAST, Charles - Bal 044 - 4th ward PENDERGAST, Margaret - Bal 101 - 1st ward 1810 Harford County Census - No "white" O'BRIEN and No PENDERGAST indexed. 1820 Harford County Census Page 21 - Owen O'BRIEN - 1 female "to 10" Page 43 - Mary O'BRIEN - 1 female "10-16" (Compiler's comment: Rosanna could be from either family!) Page 297 - Charles PENDERGAST - 1 male "to 10" " " 2 male "45 up" " " 1 female "16-26" " " 1 foreigner (Compiler's comment: This is obviously not Captain Charles, but could be his father since the probability of his coming from Ireland alone at age 15 (or 18?) seems remote. Captain Charles, age 26, seems to be missing from this census count.) !SOURCE(1): (a) Pg 300 "St. Ignatius, Hickory, and its missions" by Clarence V. Joerndt, Publication Press, Inc. Balto MD: "The priest who on occasion may have visited Havre de Grace or Susquehanna Lower Ferry in the earlier days did so presumably from St. Francis Xavier on the Little Bohemia River, or Priest Neale's Mass House, Deer Creek, or later, after the sale of the Mass House, from St. Ignatius. In the Archdiocese Archives is a letter dated May 18, 1819, from Rev. Roger Smith addressed to Archbishop Ambrose Marechal wherein he wrote, 'Last Saturday I was called to visit a sick man in Havre de Grace; I found some seventy-two Catholicks [sic] there, lately arrived from Ireland, for the purpose of prepar- ing materials for a great fort, now a-building. I was very politely waited upon by Captain Brown and Major Wigdom, both Protestants. They are going to put up for the sake of the Catholics a small temporary church of frame, and I expect to go there after a little while to give them church'". etc. !CHRONOLOGY: RIN129 1794 Captain Charles PENDERGAST b. in Dublin Ireland.
