Howev- er, no children were mentioned in the obituaries below. Nevada with Carson City as its capital became a territory in 1861 and a state in 1864.) SOURCE(1): The following were copied from newspaper clippings in a scrapbook belonging to Florence Marie PENDERGAST-7, grandmother of the compiler and niece of Celestin C. PENDERGAST. (Scrapbook is in RIN 7 file folder of the compiler): C. C. PENDERGAST DEAD The Well Known Comstocker Passes Away in Carson. C. C. PENDERGAST was found dead in his room in the Arlington House yesterday morning. Mr. PENDERGAST had been feeling unwell for some time and about two weeks ago suffered what seemed to be a stroke of apo- plexy. He retired last night at about 9 o'clock, seemingly in fair health. Late this morning, when the chambermaid attempted to enter the room, she found the door locked. She informed the porter, who looked over the transom and saw that Mr. PENDERGAST was still in bed, but could get no sign from him. Mr. Doane then went up and by means of the porch climbed in the window to find that he was dead. He was lying partially on his side, with his hands folded on his breast, and must have passed away without a struggle. The Coroner was summoned and Dr. LEE made an examination, finding that death was due to heart trouble. Mr. PENDERGAST was chief bookkeeper in the mint and was well known throughout this part of the State. When he came to Virginia he went into the stock broking business with a man named VAN BOCKELIN. After the firm closed he entered the employ of Wells, Fargo & Co., being for 15 years their agent. He then became the local agent of ZADIG, WOLL- BERG & CO., the broker firm. About two years ago, he was appointed cashier in the Carson Mint, and he held this position at his death. Arrangments have been made looking toward bringing his body here for interment, but it has not yet been definitely decided that this will be done. Before Mr. PENDERGAST went to Carson he was a resident of the Comstock for nearly a quarter of a century and everybody here knew him. (date of 14 JUL 1896 was handwritten on this clipping.) LAID AT REST The Funeral Service of the Late C. C. PENDERGAST at Carson All that is mortal of the late C. C. PENDERGAST was laid at rest in the Catholic cemetery at Carson yesterday. The funeral, which took place from the Catholic Church at the Capital City was characterized by all the solemnity and impressiveness of the rite of the Romish faith and was the most largely attended funeral to take place in this State since that of the late Governor JONES. The deceased's brother, [NOTE(2) below] who was connected with him in business in this city for many years arrived in Carson yesterday forenoon as did many of the friends of the departed. The mint was draped in colors emblematic of mourning and the interior of the church was most tastefully draped in black. At 10 o'clock a solemn high mass of requiem was said for the repose of the soul and at 2 o'clock the funeral services commenced. The remains lay in a heavy black casket and had a peculiarly lifelike appearance. The services were conducted by Rev. Father GARLAND of Carson, who delivered an exceptionally sympathetic funeral address. The pall bearers were eight in number, but the names of but four could be learned last even- ing. They were D.B. LYMAN, Alex MCCONE, ex-Governor ADAMS and Arthur RAYCRAFT. A special train left Virginia at 12 o'clock, returning about 5 in the afternoon. Among those from Virginia who attended the funeral were Joe RYAN, Alex MCCONE, D.B. LYMAN, Major CUMMINGS, W.E. SHARON, Clayton BELKNAP, Mr. LEGRIS, H. M. GORHAM and Mrs. R. P. KEATING, Con AHERN, James QUIRK, John O'TOOLE, Frank FREDERICKS, Mrs. HUNT, Thomas CRANE, Col. CONBOIE, Col. BOYLE, and Jim LOCHRAN. (The above from a morning paper dated JULY 16,1896) NOTE(1): (Perhaps a coincidence - note name above, Con AHERN. In lot 543 at Cathedral Cem. in Baltimore along with C.C. PENDERGAST's brothers, Charles and Jerome are two graves - Catherine AHERN, moved to that cemetery 1 JUL 1887 - and Mary A. AHEARN, buried 16 NOV 1892. What the connection is between the PENDERGAST and AHERN(AHEARN) families is not known. Could the above Con AHERN have been his brother-in-law in business with him for many years?) NOTE(2): It is not know which brother was at his funeral. However, Charles H. PENDERGAST-14 did come to the gold fields with great success in 1849.
