Lynch drowned. His body recovered from the Oswego Canal yesterday morning. Yesterday morning the body of John O.S. Lynch, one of the oldest and best known residents of the First Ward, was recovered from the Oswego Canal at the foot of Lock #1 in Salina. The drowned had been missing since Wednesday night and although that the body might be found in the canal, it was not until the water had been drawn off from the short level between Locks 1 and 2 that the discovery was made. The body had the appearance of having been in the water for more than a day and the only mark of violence that could be found was a cut over the right eye. The body was takne to McCarthy's Morgue. Mr. Lynch was born in New York City in 1824, and was the son of James Lynch, one of the wealthiest and best known of the early settlers of Syracuse. James Lynch, after his removal from Utica to Syracuse, in 1826, began business in a country store in Exchange Street in the First Ward. He soon became identified in the salt industry and at his death left an estate of $240,000, which was left to John Lynch, who continued the business. The bulk of the property was in salt blocks and at the decline of this industry the estate suffered considerably. For more than ten years, Mr. Lynch has not been engaged in business. He was well known about town as a story teller and a genial companion. He was very familiar wioth the early history of the city and was fond of telling of the incidents of former times. During his prime he entertained Gen. Sherman, Gen. Sheridan, Gen. Ewaing and many other prominent men. Of late he has been boarding at Louise Rebholz's hotel in Wolf Street. The surviving members of the family are James Lynch of Oneida and two sisters, Mrs. Charles Pendergast of New York and Mrs. Egbert Murray of Milwaukee. Mr. Lynch was married but afterwards separated from his wife. The latter is now living in New York. Three children were the result of this union, the eldest being a son about 32 years old and also a resident of New York. Coroner Smith investigated the case and is of the opinion that Mr. Lynch was suffering from mental disability and that his drowning was accidental. There will be no inquest. (P.4.C.5.
