Mary- land 21219 . When this compiler visited the cemetery in 1982, he found the headstones had toppled from their bases. He had them repaired and had the inscriptions reported by the Director of the cemetery. (Correspondence and bills will be found in the compiler's ancestral file folder 4-14/4-15.) Inscription: CHAS. H. PENDERGAST BELOVED HUSBAND OF LOUISE L. PENDERGAST BORN NOVEMBER 11, 1828 DIED MARCH 5, 1898. Letter from cemetery dated May 28, 1996 is filed in compiler's ahnentafel file #28 - Captain Charles Pendergast, g-great grandfather of this compiler). Requiem Mass at Church of the Holy Name, 96th St. and Amsterdam av., on Monday, March 7, at nine A.M. Interment in Baltimore. Baltimore and Syracuse papers, please copy. Clipping 2: CHARLES H. PENDERGAST Charles H. PENDERGAST died yesterday at his home, No. 63 West Ninety-sixth street. He was born in Baltimore in 1828. In 1849 he went to California. He returned East in 1856, and, with his brother, the late James F. PENDERGAST, formed the shipping firm of PENDERGAST BROTHERS & CO., of New York and Baltimore. Of late years his health failed to such an extent that he was compelled to give up active business. His widow and one daughter survive him. Clipping 3: Mr. Charles H. PENDERGAST, who died in New York, March 5, was for years active in the management of the shipping firm of PENDERGAST BROTHERS & CO. Mr. PENDERGAST was born in Baltimore seventy years ago, and was a brother of Jerome A. PENDERGAST, 211 Smith's wharf, the only survivor of the four brothers who many years ago were extensively engaged in the coastwise and South American shipping trade. In 1849 Cha- rles H. PENDERGAST was one of the pioneers from Baltimore to California gold fields who met with success. His body was brought to this city and interred in the new Cathedral cemetery. Clipping 4: CHARLES H. PENDERGAST Mr. Charles H. PENDERGAST, who died in New York Saturday, and whose death was announced in THE SUN, was for years active in the management of the shipping firm of PENDERGAST & BROS. & CO., of this city. Mr. PENDERGAST was born in Baltimore seventy years ago, and was a brother of Jerome A. PENDERGAST, 211 Smith's wharf, the only survivor of the four brothers who many years ago were extensively engaged in the coastwise and South American shipping trade. In 1849, Charles H. PENDERGAST was one of the pioneers from Baltimore to the California gold fields who met with success. On his return to Baltimore, he established the firm of PENDERGAST BROS. & CO. In 1861, in company with his brother James PENDERGAST, he went to New York and continued business there. The name of the firm in this city was changed to PENDERGAST, FENWICK & CO., with Jerome A. PENDERGAST as the senior member. After the death of two of his brothers, Charles H. PENDERGAST retired from active business and took up his residence on Seventy-third street near Central Park, New York. Seven weeks ago he was stricken with paralysis, from which he did not recover. The body will be brought to Baltimore for interment in the new Cathedral Cemetery. Handwritten note on page 15 with above clippings: "Our darling died March 5, 1898 'May his soul rest in peace, Amen'"
