It is between Lower Twin Creek and Lower Twin Road. In the 1875 atlas, it is believed to have been on the property of W. Igoou. Permission to recopy it in 1999 could not be obtained. The hand-writing seems old-fashioned and belabored. There are apparently two documents photocopied on the same paper, so that wording below follows the positioning, misspelling etc. as closely as possible: "Jacob HARE was born about 1730 in Germany. Died about 1820 in Ross County O. and buried in Twin Township. This wife Christine Afau was born about 1734 in Germany. Lived in Huntington County, Pennsylvania on Hares Valley. Died in Ross County O. about 1823. Their children were Michal, Daniel, Jacob, Philip and Elizabeth HARE. Lewis Igo married Elizabeth HARE in Ken- tucky Apr 3d 1794. Copy of Marriage Certificate This is to certify to all persons whome it may concern tha Lewis Eyegoe and Elizabeth Hayr applyed to me and was maryed before lawful witnesses I say marryed by me Samuel Sane April the 3d 1794 Witness present William Igou Ruth Cooper Philip Hare ------------------ Peter Igou Elizabeth Eygou" (Compiler's comment: Unable to ascertain the identity of William Igou. William (RIN179 came from Pennsylvania in 1811 to Ross Co OH and in 1812 to Highland Co. Lewis' brother, Peter, remained in Pennsylvania. Ruth Cooper has not been identified nor has a search for a JP named Samuel Sane been successful. Philip Hare, brother of Elizabeth is further identified by the following: From page 292, HISTORY OF ROSS AND HIGHLAND COUNTIES, OHIO - "One of the first settlers was Lewis IGO. He was a native of Maryland, born near Baltimore in the year 1767. In the fall of 1797 he came from Kentucky to the Scioto valley, purchased a tract of land of General MCARTHUR, on Lower Twin, and built a cabin on the farm now owned by his son William. The following spring he brought out his family and was accompanied by his brother-in-law, Philip HARE.") Mrs. Gillespie died in the early 1990s. Susan and Julia Ann McKENZIE were sisters.) REMARKS(1): HISTORY OF ROSS AND HIGHLAND COUNTIES, OHIO, Williams Bros. Publishers - W.W. Williams, Printer, Cleveland Ohio 1880. Page 98: On line 3 of the above list of Privates in the outfit with Captain Daniel HARE-187 was Berry SANE. Since the photcopy of a hand-written copy of this 3 Apr 1794 wedding certificate (Lewis IGOU-147/Elizabeth HARE-148) is signed by Samuel SANE, this compiler has searched for several years to find any record of Samuel or even of the name SANE without any luck till this listing. While this does not locate the place of marriage, it does indicate that the HARE/IGOU/SANE families were together somewhere in 1794. This somewhere had to be Pennsylvania, Virginia or Kentucky. SOURCE(2): In the compiler's file 47, generation 6 will be found the original letter dated November 5, 1982 from Miss Josphine METCALFE-1620: "Dear Mr. WEAVER We are enclosing some xeroxed copies of the IGOU and HARE lines that might help you. They were researched by a cousin in Las Vegas who hand-carried them to the Mormon Genealogical Library in Salt Lake City and saw them put on microfilm and then into the Granite Mountain Vault. Elizabeth HARE was the first wife of Lewis IGOU. She is buried on one of the knolls on the back of our farm. There are 3 or four other stones with no readable markings. They had 5 children. Nancy MARSH was the second wife - 3 children. I am the sixth generation on the farm and the old log cabin, second built in Twin Township 1800-1801 is still standing. Please feel free to ask any questions. I might know the answers. Sincerely Josephine METCALFE" In the letter was a rough sketch of the tombstone: DEC 7 ELIZA BETH 80 - 1803. REMARKS(1): According to Personal Ancestral File software's calculations, Josephine METCALFE and this compiler are 3rd cousins, one generation removed - common ancestor, Lewis IGOU. She died in 1993.
