a. Note:   MARRIAGE: MRIN322 To Susan MC KENZIE RIN990, 5 Sep 1818 Ross County, Ohio MRIN413 To Elizabeth PURTLEBAUGH RIN1264 DEATH: 11 SEP 1852 Middletown Ohio RESIDENCES: EARLY SETTLERS - CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, OHIO by Thelma Blair Lang, page 509, states that the IGOUs settled in Wayne Twp in 1817. This is probably not accurate since both Peter and his wife, Susan MC KENZIE were from Ross County and their marriage date was 5 Sep 1818 in Ross County. The "source" below gives 1820 as to arrival in Wayne Twp and the 1820 census confirms their presence in Wayne Twp that year. CENSUS: 1820 Census Wayne Twp, Champaign County, Ohio lists Peter IGO - 1 white male under 10, 1 white male 16-26. 1 white female 16-26 listed under agriculture. "IGOU --Peter IGOU figured prominently in the business affairs of Wayne Township from 1820 to 1850. He came to the township about 1820, from Ross County. He bought a tract of wild land and settled on it, on the left bank of King's Creek, near Mason's mill which is now owned and occupied by Susan Wright, her son and daughter. His first wife was a McKenzie. His second wife was Elizabeth Purtlebaugh, now the consort of B. F. Madden. By his first marriage, he had three sons and three daughters who grew to manhood and womanhood. Silas, the oldest son, married Merdula JOHNSON. He studied law and became noted as a practicing local attorney and politician. He died about the year 1877. John married Hannah J. Thomas for his first wife and Sarah Hefflebower for the second. He is a farmer of large experience and lives on the Dunlap farm, on Buck Creek. Aaron, the youngest son, died in 1852, and was unmarried. Mary Ann became the wife of William JOHNSON, and, after his demise, she married Eley HALLOWELL. Elizabeth married A. EVANS and lives in Cincinnati. Amanda became the wife of William JENKINS, and, with her husband, lives in Indianapolis. Mr. IGOU sold his farm to Thomas BALDWIN, and bought the farm now owned by Martin M. DICKSON, in the southwest part of the township. About the year 1848, he built the Pearce corner, in Middletown, where, in 1852, he died. IGOU was a man of generous heart, liberal in his views, fond of discussion, well read on the current topics of the day, gifted in conversation, a little too fond of litigation, a professed Universalist a good neighbor and a kind husband and father. He served the township as Justice of the Peace for several successive years, besides filling other places of trust. CITATION: HISTORY OF CHAMPAIGN COUNTY OHIO by Judge Evan P. CITATION(2): Urbana Daily Citizen, page 4, 30 Oct 1959 article: Hunters of Mingo and Mt Tabor Had Origin in North Ireland by Warren Everhart "In the home of Alexander St. Clair Hunter the first Methodist class meeting ever held in Mingo Valley took place. Out of this meeting grew the Methodist societies of Mingo Valley and the Mt tabor Church. At the Mt Tabor cemetery one will find the graves of dozens of descendants of this numerous family........
It was the year 1821 that a number of Methodists gathered at the home of Alexander St. Clair Hunter for the purpose of organizing a religion society. The society was known as the North Salem Methodist Society. A log church was built on the land of Lydia Russell, this was used as a meeting house until 1838, then a couple of moves were made to other buildings until 1869 when the final move was made to the new Methodist Church in Mingo.
Some of the pioneer people who were active in this Society thruout the years until 1869 were Alexander St. Clair Hunter, Sarah Hunter, Thos. Hunter, Robert Goode, his wife and mother, Lydia Russell, William Sharp, Issac Sharp, Peter Igou, Joshua Spain, Hudson Haines, Abram Martin, David Martin, Williams Evans, Issac Sharp, John Haines, John Hunter, Joseph Everett, James Hunter, Theodric Goode, Thomas Everett and Solmon Cole.
