Note: !BIRTH: Possibly ABT 1806/08. Census 1860 indicates 1808; 1865 indicates 1806. !PARENTS' FAMILY: MRIN #18 James MCANERNEY RIN120/unknown spouse !CHR: Sponsors for John's (junior) baptism were Thomas BURNS and Mary McCANN (or McGOWAN - handwriting in the baptismal record book in this case was illegible to the compiler). MARRIAGES RECORDED IN PROVIDENCE 1636-1850 (R>I> Historical Society Library) on page 118 listed: "BURNS, Thomas & Mary McGOWAN 1830". (notation also refers to Vol 5, Pg 251 for reason unknown) At City Hall in Providence - DEATHS 1871-1880 - Vol VII, page 57 "Thomas BURNS, 70 yrs, Mar 27, 1879". Thomas may some day be connected to Catherine as brother and sister? !MARRIAGE: 2nd m. recorded Providence RI 1636-1850 "McAnerney, John & Louisa Hanger 18 SEP 1844 by Rev. William Wiley". Pg 255 - 4:76 !DEATH: Probably Feb. 1876 in Jersey City NJ. !BURIAL: St. Peter's Cemetery, 823 West Side Ave., Jersey City, N.J., ph 433-0342. Lot Block D. #101, listed in record #21384 as "John McEnerny" - father of John with interment 23 FEB 1876.. Lot is listed as owned by Patrick Kane. Also buried on lot are #20373, Alice G. McEnerny, age 5 mo and Joseph McEnerny, age 14 mo. Since they are listed as deceased children of Colonel John McAnerney in his memoirs, it would appear that the cemetery misspelled the surname of all three. !RESIDENCES: The Providence city directories show him as a confectioner at 99 North Main St., Providence 1847 through 1865. Apparently after the death of his second wife, Louisa HANGER, he went to Jersey City NJ where his son John lived. (Marshall Joseph MCANERNEY, the first child of son John was born there in 1867. Too, John's (senior) daughter, Louisa RIN119, by his second wife, was sponsor at the baptism of son of John (junior), John Preston MCANERNEY, in Jersey City 1869. !CENSUS: 1860 Providence RI pg 305 2nd ward. Main SOURCE(1): Quotation from Memoirs of John MCANERNEY (junior) RIN12 follows: "Joseph Alfred - Fifth child born in Jersey City NJ July 27, 1873. Baptized at St. Peter's Church by Rev. John MCQUADE August 1873. Sponsors were Patrick FARRELLY - Alice R. CONNELLY. Died Nov. 6, 1874. Buried St. Peter's Cemetery, Jersey City. "Dear little St. Joseph, Pray for us." "Alice Gertrude - Sixth child born Feb. 12, 1875, in Jersey City. Baptized at St. Peter's Church by Rev. MARSHALL, Mar. 2, 1875. Died July 31, 1875. Buried St. Peter's Cemetery, Jersey City. "Dear little St. Alice, pray for us." !COMMENTS: As quoted below, John McAnerney possibly came from Ireland abt 1820 via Canada and Mass. to R.I. His father, James, followed years later. !SOURCE(2): The Memoirs of Colonel John MCANERNEY, son of subject start out as follows: "John MCANERNEY was born in the city of Providence, Rhode Island, on the 10th day of August, 1838. His father was John MCANERNEY and his mother was Catherine BURNS, a de- scendant of Robert Burns the poet. Both were natives of the north of Ireland near Belfast. After their marriage they emigrated to Canada about the year 1820 settling in Mas- sachusetts and later in Providence, R.I., where their son who is the subject of this marrative, was born. His mother died in his infancy. -- - - -" Several items above don't add up! The record book at the Cathedral of SS Peter and Paul, Providence show that he was baptized JUL 2, 1838. so he was mistaken about his birth date. The 1965 census shows that his father, the subject of this report was 59 years of age indicating a birth year of 1806 (the census of 1860 gives his age as 52 indicating birth in 1808!). That would mean that he was but 14 (or 12) years of age in 1820 (after their marriage). While it is quite possible that he married at such an early age of 14, but very improbable that they could have emigrated alone so young. Possibly he didn't really know his correct age for the census takers. NOTES: In compiler's ahnentafel file folder 24-5, will be found the original hand-written notes made in Providence, R.I. con- cerning the McAnerneys and also the Burns families. It is highly possible that Thomas Burns might have been Catherine Burns brother since he and his wife, Mary, sponsored John McAnerney (jr) at his baptism.
