Was wounded in action in France losing an eye and received the Silver Star for bravery in action. Received field commission and eventually, after the war, became Captain of Company K. Clippings of articles concerning him and photograph will be found in page 27 of scrapbook (see SOURCE(2). !AVOCATION: New York National Guard. An active and very dedicated member of Alcoholics Anonymous and report- edly helped many who badly needed assistance. !SOURCE(1): Personal knowledge of compiler. !SOURCE(2): Page 11 of compiler's grandmother, Florence Marie PENDERGAST-7 scrap- book (this scrapbook was apparently originally that of compiler's great grandmother - see inscription on page 76). . It is in the compiler's file folder for his grandparents, 6-3/7-3. It also gives dates of all of her childrens' birth dates in her handwriting on page 11. !REMARKS(1): Although some sources give a middle name of "Henry", according to John MC ANERNEY's daughter, Joan-260, John was named after his grandfather, Col. John MC ANERNEY RIN12 who said that if he was to be named after him, there should be no middle name. However, SOURCE(2) includes the "Henry". !REMARKS(2): John MC ANERNEY was "best man" at the compiler's "secret" wedding in March of 1942 and did the research necessary to find where the compiler had been baptized and obtained the necessary certificate for a wedding in the Catholic faith.
