a. Note:   Harman desired more than a common education, so financed himself at
 Emory and Henry College. Endowed with a very alert mind, he accumulated
 vast acreage in several states and was a dealer in livestock, President
 of the Bank of Bland County, and was the first sheriff of Bland County
 during the Civil War, having traded places with a brother who wanted
 to join the army. e spend long hours in the saddle looking after his
 interests, to which he attributed his good health. But a broken hip
 caused by a horse falling on him caused his last years to be spent
 in a wheel chair.
