Continued: Patrick learned the construction carpenter trade, as did his brother Barney (Bernard). They worked building the trestles that spanned Highway 101 at the Cranell crossing, by Little River for years, but has since been torn down. He built a lot of the Train Trestles in Humboldt County. Patrick met a young lady who was working in the Korbel Cookhouse also, her name was Clara Belle Doe. They were married in 1901 and raised a family of four. Sometime in the 1920s, Clara and Patrick decided to move to Smith River and build a dairy farm.. They ordered a barge full of lumber that would be delivered into the mouth of the Smith River and anchored at the bottom of the lane, where Patrick and Herman would use the horses and wagon to move all the lumber about of mile up the lane and by the Highway 101, where they would build the Ranch House. Every board that went into that house was cut by hand, every finished board and all the mouldings were made by Grampa Pat, by hand. The Ranch house is still standing and till this day is known as the Brogan Ranch died of a heart attack in Smith River.
