He was one of the pioneer settlers of Green County, having emigrated to Washington Township with his family in 1853. "Germans to America - 1853" shows the following entries for the ship "Fanny" from Antwerp to New York arrived May 5, 1853: Wittenwyler, Matthias, age 38, farmer; Rosina, age 38, farmer; Mathias, age 10; Jacob, age 9; Aduak, Anna, age 64, farmer.
