a. Note:   Joseph G. Dean was born in Mercer Co., Oct. 22, 1822. He married Tryphena Loveland in 1846 who died 1864. He married his second wife, Mrs. L. E. Wilson, in 1866. Mr. Dean was one of the first to enlist in the Second Wisconsin Infantry, April 1861. He was promoted to First Sergeant and discharged at the expiration of his term of service. He re-enlist in the First Wisconsin Heavy Artillery and was promoted to First Lieutenant, serving until the close of the war. He moved from Wisconsin to Renville Co., Minn, in 1866, and from there to Ottertail Co., Minn, in 1871. In 1886 he moved to Olivor Co., Dakota. During his service in the artillery he received an injury from which he was a constant sufferer. His funeral services were held in the court house in Raymond, Feb. 17, the largest gathering ever held in the county. Mr. Dean held no particular religious belief, trusting in universal salvation for all who "do unto others as ye would that they do unto you".
