a. Note:   ut not proven) to have been serving in that capacity in the Civil War. (Note: Some family members state that he was indeed a doctor, but did not serve in the Civil War.) In 1880, he was also a Farmer in addition to being a physician.
  !2. Newell was educated at the University of Pennsylvania Medical School. He was evidentally quite prosperous as he was able to provide a college education for several of his children. He built a house on the "Glenn Farm" near Boone, North Carolina. This farm (which was owned by Jeremiah Glenn, his father) was eventually divided among the children of Jeremiah.
