Notes
a. Note:   I have been working over 30 years on trying to discover my family roots and have been down many wrong roads and alleys and have hit my share of brick walls along the way. But with the help of many fellow travelers I have been able to discover many long lost family members and related families.
I would like also to strongly encourage all Nicholas / Nichols / Nicols family members to take advantage of DNA testing so that we might be able one day to connect all Nicholas / Nichols families. Based upon DNA testing my line of Nicholas came from either Wales or Cornwall and is Celtic lineage. If you query Wales or Cornwall Surnames you will see that the Nicholas name is common in these areas of Great Britain. I would highly recommend Brian Hammans web site: ( http://www.brian-hamman.com/ResultsForNicholsSurnameProject.htm ) to learn more about specific DNA testing for the Nicholas surname that is ongoing that has links for discounts for DNA testing and links to information about how DNA testing is done and what you can expect from your test results .
Through Brians site I have made 2 additional family connections that would have not been available without DNA testing one is to Joseph Nicholas of Tenn and to George Nichols of Boston Mass, my John Nicholas / Nichols father may had been George Nicholas who had a son John Nicholas as I matched the DNA for his line. I would also highly recommend Family Tree DNA web site to learn more about DNA testing found at www.familytreedna.com
Males can test their Y-DNA to discover their ancestry at the root of their direct paternal line, or father's father's father's, etc, line. Men and women can also test their mtDNA to trace their maternal ancestry, on their mother's mother's mother's (etc) line. If there's a different line in your family tree you want to trace, all you need to do is test the right relative to determine the ancestral origins of that line.
The test results tell you whether the origins of the line are European, Asian, African, or Native American. They can even tell you whether the lineage may be Jewish in origin. This is a great way to find out whether that family rumor or story is really true.
The neat thing about this service is it matches you against the Family Tree DNA database, the largest of its kind in the world. Family Tree DNA gives you the list of countries where other people with the same or similar results come from so you can see the range of places where your ancestors may have come from, too.
All it takes is a painless cheek swab.
