Notes
a. Note:   JESSE STOCKTON, born 4 September 1755, was a son of Thomas and Rachel (nee Allen) Stockton, Sr., and a grandson of Davis Stockton of Albemarle County, Virginia. The first documented information on Jesse Stockton's family was a mention of his grandfather, Davis Stockton, on a Virginia Land Office Patent to Michael Wood (Woods) dated 10 June 1737. "George the Second . . . in Consideration of the Sum of Forty Shillings of good and lawful Money . . . do Give Grant and Confirm unto Michael Wood one certain Tract or Parcel of Land containing four hundred Acres lying and being in the County of Goochland on the heads of Ivy Creek on other Branches of the North River on the South Side of the North River and bounded as followeth (to wit) Beginning at a hiccory on Davis Stocktons Line . . . crossing a Branch of the North River . . . to Pointers in Davis Stockton's Line . . . the Tenth Day June one thousand seven hundred and thirty seven In the Tenth Year of our Reign.   Jesse Stockton's mother, Rachel (nee Allen) Stockton, was a daughter of Samuel and Margaret (nee Chapman) Allen. The Chapman family was from Chesterfield Township, Burlington County, New Jersey. Rachel Allen's father died and her mother married Samuel Arnold. The Samuel Arnold family moved to Goochland County and can be found there by 1741, however, they might have been living there several years before that time. Thomas Stockton appears to have met and married Rachel Allen in Goochland County in the late 1730's or very early 1740's.

Jesse 3 Stockton was not the sole owner of the plantation, his mother Rachel (nee Allen) Stockton owned one third of the estate of Thomas 2 Stockton, Sr. For Jesse to sell the plantation his mother would also need to sell her one third interest in the plantation. This is Jesse 3 (Thomas 2, Davis 1) Stockton and his mother Rachel (nee Allen) Stockton selling the plantation of Thomas 2 Stockton, Sr. The Thomas Stockton who was a witness to the deed was Thomas 3 (Thomas 2, Davis 1) Stockton, Jr., and the James Hays who was a witness to the above deed was a brother of Mary Hays who married Jesse Stockton.

Jesse 3 (Thomas 2, Davis 1) Stockton and Mary (nee Hays) Stockton named their first son Thomas Stockton. This would follow the tradition of naming a first son after his paternal grandfather. Thomas 4 Stockton, a son of Jesse and Mary (nee Hays) Stockton, married Elsie Johnson. Thomas was buried in Holeman Cemetery, Warren County, Illinois. His headstone shows he died 17 Jan 1853 at age 64 years, 7 months and 13 days, so born 4 June 1788. The 1850 census, Warren County, Illinois, shows Thomas Stockton as 62 years old and born in Virginia.
Jesse 3 (Thomas 2, Davis 1) Stockton and Mary (nee Hays) Stockton named their second daughter Rachel. This would follow the tradition of naming a second daughter after her paternal grandmother. Rachel 4 Stockton's paternal grandmother was Rachel (nee Allen) Stockton. Jesse and Mary Stockton named their first daughter Sophia after her maternal grandmother, Sophia (nee Wood) Hays.

In the early 1790s there were several deeds in Albemarle County, Virginia to and from Jesse and Mary Stockton. 11 February 1792 "between Jesse Stockton and his Wife, Mary Stockton, of County of Albemarle . . . one hundred forty eight acres". Later that same year "Sixth day of December . . . one thousand seven hundred and ninty two; Between Jesse Stockton and his Wife, Mary . . . one hundred forty eight and a half acres", and the last mention of Jesse Stockton in Albemarle County was a deed from Jesse and Mary Stockton to Francis Davis for 44 or 54 acres on 26 Jan 1793. After the sale of Thomas 2 Stockton's land there was no further mention of "Jesse and Rachel Stockton". All of the Albemarle County deeds after the sale of Thomas 2 Stockton's land were from "Jesse and his Wife, Mary", and again, all of the Stocktons living in Albemarle County in the 1780s and 1790s seem to be from the Thomas 2 Stockton family.
The parents of Mary Hays were Moses and Sophia (nee Wood) Hays. It appears that Jesse 3 and Mary (nee Hays) Stockton's first daughter was Sophia, named for her grandmother. Two of Jesse and Marys first four children were Thomas and Rachel, which were the names of the parents of Jesse 3 (Thomas 2 and Rachel Allen) Stockton.
Two deeds dated 1792 in Albemarle County, Virginia, prove that Jesse 3 (Thomas 2) Stockton's wife was named Mary. It also appears that Jesse 3 (Thomas 2, Davis 1) Stockton and his wife Mary moved to Barren County, Kentucky by 1806, where they are later shown on the 1810 census. Newberry 3 (Thomas 2, Davis 1) Stockton appears to have died in Barren County, Kentucky in about 1807. Thomas 3 (Thomas 2, Davis 1) Stockton is also shown living in Barren County in the 1810 census along with Jesse 3 (Thomas 2, Davis 1) Stockton.
The family shown for Jesse and Mary Stockton in the 1810 Barren County census is an excellent match for the family of Jesse 3, father of Capt. James 4 Stockton. The 1810 Barren County Jesse 3 and Mary Stockton family are not found in Barren County after the 1813 Tax List. It appears that the entire Jesse 3 and Mary Stockton family moved out of Barren County sometime after the 1813 Tax List as no unaccounted for Stocktons can be found in the 1820 or later Barren County census. In 1816 and 1817 John 4 Stockton and Capt. James 4 Stockton both married in Woodford County, Kentucky. Jesse Stockton is shown living in Clark County, Ohio, in 1820. This Jesse is the father of Capt. James 4 Stockton. This same Jesse 3 Stockton and family can be found living in Jennings County, Indiana in the 1830 census. (Note that Clark County, Ohio, is next to Champaign County, Ohio.)
The 1783, 1785, 1787, 1790 and 1791 Tax Lists have only one Jesse Stockton. It is known from the will of Thomas 2 that his son Jesse 3 owned property in Albemarle County at that time, which would be the 163 acres that he owned with his mother Rachel Stockton. It appears from the 1783 Personal Tax List, the 1785 Tax List, the 1787 Tax List, the 1790 and 1791 Land Tax Lists that there was only on adult Jesse Stockton living in Albemarle County in the 1780s and 1790s, and that was Jesse 3 (Thomas 2, Davis 1) Stockton.

There is only one marriage record for a Jesse Stockton in Albemarle County, Virginia in the 1780s, and that is Jesse Stockton to Mary Hays. There is no record of a Jesse Stockton to a Rachel, and there is not another marriage record of a Jesse Stockton and Mary. The Jesse 3 Stockton who married Mary Hays was Jesse 3 (Thomas 2, Davis 1) Stockton, as only the family of Thomas 2 Stockton lived in Albemarle County in the 1780s and 1790s.

All names and ages and information in parentheses have been added. This is an excellent match for what the book DAVIS STOCKTON OF VIRGINIA has for the family of Jesse 3 (Samuel 2, Davis 1) Stockton. T. J. Stockton included very little information about Thomas 4 and Sophia 4 Stockton. The mother of Mary (nee Hays) Stockton was Sophia (nee Wood) Hays (note that Sophia Stockton married William Evans in Barren County, Kentucky, on 20 Oct 1812). It is Jesse 3 (Thomas 2, Davis 1) Stockton that is shown living in Barren County, Kentucky in the 1810 census. Thomas Stockton, Jr., was the surety for Sophia Stockton and William Evans. This appears to be Thomas 3 (Thomas 2 Sr., Davis 1) Stockton, Jr.

Jesse 3 Stockton is shown on 1794 to 1800 Mason County Tax Lists, but Jesse 3 Stockton cannot be found in the 1810 census of Mason County, Kentucky. It appears that Jesse 3 Stockton was in Mason County until 1805 when he sold his land, and then moved to Barren County, Kentucky by 1806 where a Jesse Stockton is first shown on a poll tax list. Jesse Stockton is shown on poll tax lists in Barren County until 1813.
