Wilkerson B. Wayland was born in Crawfordsville, Indiana, Jan. 11, 1845. He located in Lancaster before the war and has held continuous residence here with the exception of what time he served his country in the civil strife. At the time of his death he was city marshal of Lancaster, having been elected for two years at the last spring election, and which office he has filled at intervals for the past forty years; also serving as constable of Liberty township and deputy sheriff of the county at various times. As a peace officer he had few equals and no superiors and commanded the respect of the evil and the good. His services to his country, state, county and town is a living monument to his integrity and fidelity of the trust imposed. He was a devoted husband, kind neighbor and dutiful citizen, and his death is deeply deplored by everyone. To the bereaved ones we commend the to the Master whom their loved one served.
