a. Note:   Martin Schimmele, oldest son of Casper and Kathryn Schimmele was born near Bird Island, Illinois and lived a few years in this area before moving with his parents to a farm East of Mapleton, Minnesota, about 1859. He lived with his parents on a large farm his father homesteaded, and when he grew up his father set him up on a farm where he lived. He later married Helene Weisner and they made this their home until about 1914 when he decided to set up a butcher shop in Mapleton, where he was famous in the butchering of cattle and hogs. He was noted for some of the finest sausage and bolgna in the area. No matter who came in his shop they received a sample with crackers to go with it. He also was a good hunter and went out to Lura Lake to hunt, and came back to town with a fair amount of birds, which he shared with his friends.
