During the Civil War, Abraham served in Company I of the 4th Iowa Cavalry. In June 1862, he was discharged at Batesville, AK, "for disability." On 31 March 1864, he re-enlisted in the same company. Following is Abraham's obituary: Abraham H Needles was born in Morrow County, Ohio, December 23, 1839, died at Audubon, Iowa September 5, 1910 at about 1 o'clock in the afternoon. When about 4 years old, he moved with his parents to Gentry County, Missouri. In 1861, he came to Madison County, Iowa. On October 10, 1861, he enlisted in Company I of the 4th Iowa Cavalry. He was discharged on acoun of disability. He again enlisted in the same company and regiment March 31, 1864, and served until August 8, 1865. He was a good soldier. On October 24, 1862, he was united in marriage to Marie A. Boughton at Winterset, Iowa. He moved to Audubon, Iowa spring of 1884 and has made his home ever since. Four children were born to this union: John Needles of Sioux City, Mrs. Bert Keith of Audubon, Mrs. Elmer Beems of Herrick, South Dakota, and 1 daughter deceased. Mrs. Bert Eaton is a granddaughter and there are several other grandchildren. Funeral services held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the home, Rev. Ed B. Cousins conducting the services after which the body was laid to rest in Maple Grove Cemetery. Doc Needles, as he was commonly known, was well known in Audubon and had many friends. He also leaves an aged wife to mourn her loss. His sister Elizabeth McDonald of Rodney was also here to attend the funeral. (Source: ID #1ABI)
