Dodds who is William Harvey was born in Jefferson Co., Illinois and his father John Dodds was born in 1808 in Christian Co., Ky and his mother Susan Wallace was born in Jefferson Co., Ill. Earlier census for John Dodds of Jefferson Co., 1850 shows his place of birth as Ky and Susan Wallace as Ill. On John Dodds gravestone it shows date of birth as Aug 24, 1808 died May 19, 1889 also Susan Dodds born Aug 21, 1817 Died Aug 30, 1872 IGI Record Gender: M Birth: 24 Sep 1808 Christian, Kentucky.

  Dodds, W. H., farmer, P.O. Pierceville; owns 130 acres of land, valued at $35 per acre; born Sept., 19, 1838, in Jefferson Co., Ill.; came with parents to Iowa in the spring of 1851, and located in Lee Co.; in 1854, came to Van Buren Co.; made his home at his father's till he enlisted in Co. F, 14th Iowa Inf, in October, 1861; participated in the battle of Fort Donelson; also at Pittsburg Landing; at the latter place was taken prisoner; sent to Montogomery, Ala; thence to Macon, Ga./ then to Olivia, Va., where he was paroled and exchanged, after being in prison over nine months; re-entered the service in April, 1862, was promoted to Second Lieutenant; in the spring of 1863, to First Lieutenant; was with Gen. Banks in his Red River expedition; also with A. J. Smith in his raid through Mississippi; mustered out in November 1864, and returned home. Married Catherine S. Geddis, of this county, June 1, 1865; she was born in 1847, died in November, 1868; he again married, Ellen M. Perry March 1, 1872; she was born in 1854, in Ohio; had two children by first wife - - Lydia W. Dodds and William Vanmeter Dodds and two by second wife - - John D. Dodds and Homer Dodds. Mr. Dodds went to California in February 1870, returned the following fall. Is a member of the Missionary Baptist Church: Greenbacker.
  Obit for Lieutenant W. H. Dodds.
  Tuesday morning of this week, May 8, 1917, Lieut. W. H. Dodds aged about 77, died at his home in Ottawa, Kansas. He was an officer in the Fourteenth Iowa Infantry during the Civil War, enlisting in the Harrisburg township, this county. He is a brother of C. W. Dodds of Keosauqua and John F. Dodds of Harrisburg. Two sons, Lute of Utica, and Mete of Pierceville, born to him by his first wife who was Miss Kate Gaddis who died years ago, survive. He is also survived by his second wife, who was Miss Ellen Perry of this county, and three sons born to them. The mother is a niece of Mrs. J. W. Rowley of Keosauqua. The deceased was a citizen of high character and universally respected by all his acquaintances. He had been in poor health for some time previous to his death and the last two years suffered much from a broken hip, the result of being struck by an automobile He will be buried Thursday in the Ottawa, Kan, cemetery.
