Edward's death certificate, 1900, 1910 & 1920 census all list his birth place as Pennsylvania. According to Louise Kinney, Edward's stepmother Emma was mean -- came at Ed with a butcher knife. He ran away from home at age 13. 1900 IN Census, Blackford Co, Harrison Twp., Montpelier -- Edward age 36, Mary R, age 34, Catherine age 12 and Frank age 10 living in Montpelier w/ Frederick Shaffstall age 28 and Peter Keenan, boarder. All in the oil business. Edward listed as born Penna. Blackford Co. was in the middle of a boom around 1900 because of the discovery of gas. Had as many as 14 different glass factories, all fueled by gas. Louise said Ed owned a glass factory with a priest, a predecessor of the original Ball Brothers glass company. Moved to Indpls 1906, lived at 3335 N. Meridian St. (City Directory) According to Louise, Keenan had servants, including a coachman. 1910 IN Census, Marion Co. E.D. #62, Sheet 4A-B -- Edward age 45, May age 43, Frank J. age 20, Mary age 8, plus Katherine N. Dunlap, age 22, Louise C. age 2 and Edward Francis Dunlap age 3 mos, living at 2419 N. Delaware. Census shows May (Mary Rebecca) with 4 children, 3 living. Must have lost a child at some time? Ed's occupation "Manager in the oil business." Edward listed as born in Penna; birthplace of Ed's father also given as Penna. instead of Ireland. Maybe Mary R. didn't know or didn't care about Irish origins? According to Louise, Ed traveled constantly, had oil leases in Oklahoma, but came up dry. Went to work for an oil company (Sinclair?), came home only for Christmas and Easter. Son Frank died 1913 of Bright's disease. 1915, moved to 2428 N. Capitol Ave. (City Directory) 1920 IN Census, Marion Co., Center Twp. 3rd Ward -- Edward age 55, Mary R. age 53, living w/ daughter Mary age 17, Louise age 12 and Edward Dunlap, age 9, and Mary McGrady, born in Ireland, lodger. Address 2428 N. Capitol Ave. Edward listed as born Penna. Wife Mary Rebecca died 1920; came home once a month, Mary age 18 left in charge of the house as well as of Louise and Ed Dunlap. Catherine was gone, married Joe Sommerville around 1913. Became ill on the train; taken off at Streator, IL (LaSalle Co.) and died there. Brought to Indianapolis for burial. Death Certificate lists him as an "Official" of Sinclair Oil Co. Gives his residence as Tulsa, OK. Obituary -- Indianapolis Star, Saturday Nov. 11, 1922 KEENAN -- Edward W., father of Mrs. J. R. Summerville, nee Keenan, and Mary Keenan, died Nov. 7 at Streator, Ill. Funeral Saturday, Nov. 11, at 8:30 a.m. at Finn Bros. funeral parlors, 135 W. Market, followed by services at St. John's Church at 9 a.m. Burial at Holy Cross cemetery. Friends invited.
