Notes
a. Note:   Granny MC (Mary Catherine) and Will Coxson had eight children while living in Muddy York, Markham, Ontario, Canada. Those eight (seven actually as Rachel Coxson died at birth) were subjects of the British Empire. Charles Sheldon was naturalized in the States; I don't know
 about the others.
Will deserted his family in 1834, returned to his parents' home in Canal
Township. Granny was pregnant with Martha; thus, she had to remain in
Markham until the child was born. Somehow she then brought all seven and
came to Canal Township (something of a miracle in that day). Whether Will
liked it or not, he was reunited with his wife and family. They stayed
in Will's childhood home until he could build a cabin for them. His
parents gave him 50 acres of land "due to their natural love and
affection." Six more children were born in the log cabin, and Liza was
 the youngest of the family.
Once Will returned to Canada with his oldest son, John Paul. John had
warned him that he would not stay with him if he drank. Will got
plastered and John told the landlady he was going back to the States. The last time Will deserted his family was in 1849. He went to Lockport,
New York. There he worked repairing the locks on the Erie Canal. On New
Year's Eve of 1850 he became involved in a drunken brawl and was nearly
dead on the spot. However, he lived until April of 1850 when he died in
the Almshouse. There he is buried in Potter's Field. When word came
finally of his death, Granny sent her son William, Jr. to Lockport to ask
questions and to see his grave. The grave is there along with many
others and all of them are unmarked. (Ken Gibbons)
